Re: My first 5

Hi, welcoming lot these, I'm new too. Tell me more about your gearbox woes. What was the problem? I've got a 2003 Sport with a dodgy gearbox.

Re: How secure is a hardtop without the side clamps?

Bargain! I like the look of a contrasting hard-top. Matt black is particularly cool. Unless you're handy with a spray gun, you can expect painting it to properly match to cost about the same again. But doing a coat of Plasti-dip is easy enough to do. Plastidip is what i was thinking, maybe grey the...

Re: whats needed to swap 6 speed to 5 speed?

Are you sure it's a problem with the gearbox itself? There are various problems that cause some nasty sounding noises on MX5s. Some can be fixed with a change of clutch, adjusting the PPF a little or even just tying up some pipes. What are the symptoms and can you describe the noise? p.s. they migh...

Re: whats needed to swap 6 speed to 5 speed?

Cheers for that, I suspected there must be a catch somewhere. Has anyone had a 6 speed rebuilt? CBS Nelson diagnosed a tailshaft bearing out, the car is under warranty but it really only makes the noise once its warm, but once your tuned into it you notice it all the time. Not holding out much hope ...

Re: How secure is a hardtop without the side clamps?

Got the hardtop home, no leaks apart for wind getting in the sides with no clamps. Was a bargain at £250 for genuine mazda top, heated screen, pigtail wiring and all clamps present. To top it off, its in mint condition only problem its silver but at least its neutral and doesnt clash too much with s...

Re: How secure is a hardtop without the side clamps?

Excellent, found some bolts that fit the inside of the car and cable ties to wrap round the bolts to the side clamps on the hardtop. Saw a picture of it somewhere on thread talking about rollcages and hardtops, this will do until I buy a set of the hook parts that bolt on to the car body. My car has...

whats needed to swap 6 speed to 5 speed?

My VT sport has a dodgy gearbox with 2nd hand 6 speeds costing £400+ I'm thinking of having a 5 speed fitted. I'm not that taken with the extra gear change and reckon it will miles cheaper to fit a 5 speed. Is it just a case of swapping the gearbox? will the propshaft fit? What about the axle final ...

How secure is a hardtop without the side clamps?

I've just bought a hardtop which is 45 miles away and i need to pick it up. My car doesent have the side clamp brackets but has the chrome bolts at the rear. Is it secure enough to not fly off on the motorway without the side clamps?

Re: Hi from Preston

Took the car up to CBS autos today in Nelson about the strange grating noise. The fella (Carl I think), nice chap, had a good look over it, adjusted the PPF and diagnosed the gearbox was faulty. He waylayed some of my fears of the diff failing and made me feel a little better about the car in genera...

Re: Basic help in Preston if needed.

Where abouts are you mate? I'm in Ashton, I'm no mechanic either, but can do some stuff. Sometimes an extra pair of hands or alternative idea could be useful, I could of course do the same in return. We could do a Preston meet perhaps?
