Another use for baking soda...

Postby Hamish » Sat May 04, 2013 9:03 pm

Alreet. Moving on from electrolysis with baking soda for rust removal, we go on to experiment number 2.

So lets begin.

Some baking soda:

This is what it looks like.....yeah, I know what you're thinking
Image

You will need an air gun with a long nozzle, some tube and some electrical tape:
Image

Cut a small slit in the tube to put the nozzle of the air gun through...about 2-3 inches from one end:

Insert air gun into slit:

Tape up:

About this length cut off at an angle:

Now I forgot to take a pic here, but that ^ end of the hose, goes in your box of baking soda.

You will also need a compressor:
Image

Right, you can see what we are up to here. Now this will not remove rust, but it will remove light corrosion from aluminium and light metals...and clean it up. So you can do things like rocker cover, air intake and such like. For this example I am going to use a crusty manifold cover:
Image

You will also need a mask and eye protection:

Now, after switching on compressor, press the trigger and blast away. This was 10 seconds of blasting:

Yes, well that's all very well Hammy, but lets so something really good. Well, one thing this is absolutely perfect for is.................................. alloy wheels :)

Now I ahve already painted the fronts of my wheels, but the back has some corrosion - the usual type on alloys:

Now this stuff is so fine it creates a super smooth finish and safely removes corrosion:

Now you have a perfect surface for painting.

You can safely do the fronts too...and those with the MK3 wheels with alloy corrosion, this is perfect solution to getting rid of the corrosion and painting them up yourself.

Just to finish, here's my tasty alloys that I painted a shadow paint using black and silver and gave it a silver rim :)

Oh, jsut before I show you that, being anal, here's my horn that I painted to match
Image

Now these wheels either look black shadow or gunmetal depending on how the light hits them:
They started off like this:

And ended up like this... *yes Wayne, I know, I will put up that other post about painting Bob the Mk3 ;) )

Another tip for electrolysis later this weekend :)

...oh, I forgot to say, this stuff makes a mess, so best do it in a box or something similar... you can re-use it. However, for this experiment I did this and made a mess.

If you are like me and live in your cage, tidy it up :)
