Rattling door window cure...Mk 1 NA,Mk2- 2.5 NB/FL

Postby Mazda Mender » Wed Jun 27, 2018 7:03 am

Now this is one that you notice when the hard top is off or the hood down as the side window glass is no longer supported and under pressure by the seals... and even more so when the window is down, you get a really annoying rattle..
This is a common problem on the MK 1 NA,Mk 2 NB/2.5 NBFL and is simple enough to solve with basic tools....

This can be done with the roof on or off ,up or down ,you will need to remove the door card, there are a couple of different version of door cards that were fitted to the Mk 1 NA through its production and also to the MK 2 NB and MK 2.5 NBFL so if you are unsure on how to remove, please get in touch and state version or better still send pics and we can guide you through it...

******Clicking on the images will enlarge them for better viewing ********

Remove the door card...(this is a Mk 1 NA 1.8 edition ) I will not go into detail on this as there are different types....

Once removed you now need to peel back the weather membrane....

Once that is done you need to turn on the ignition ( Only if electric windows are fitted)( " DO NOT LEAVE THE IGNITION ON ,WHICH IS EVEN MORE SO ON A MK1 1.8cc ,AS IT CAN BURN OUT COILS AND THE ECU") and bring the door glass down (somewhere around half way) so the removal screws for the window to the electric or manual lift mechanism are lined up with the removal holes in the inner door skin ,there are three to be removed....

Now you need to remove the 2 x window stoppers first at the top of the inner door skin, held in place by 10 mm head bolts , you will need a 1/4 drive ratchet ,small extension bit and a 10 mm 1/4 drive socket. remove the bolt and the stoppers...

Now you can pull the door glass up and off the lift mech and free from the door, put the glass on something to cushion it from scratching or breaking as we will be working on it, as you can see from the pictures the guide bush is toast and bits were all found living in the bottom of the door...

So you will need a new Guide bush which was supplied by Autolinkmx5 and a T30 torx bit to remove the bolt....
The MK 2/2.5 guide bush will fit the MK 1 and the other way around, but please note that the guide bush on it's own is not available to buy new "IF" you want a new one you will need to buy the whole window unit with them already fitted on, so a good s/hand one from Autolinkmx5 is a must......

***Note :- that the MK2 one seems to be made of better stuff than the MK1. We see a lot more MK1 bushes that have fallen apart than we do the MK2 version, so a good upgrade would be to fit the mk2 bush on a MK1.****

Refit as removed with the new guide bush, now with it being a rubber part I personally build back up with red rubber grease to help stop it drying out next time...
Here is one on another door glass for reference....

Take the opportunity to grease and lube the channels with grease and silicon lube spray, grease on the inner cables etc etc....and then it is just a case of building it all back up as removed...
Now a tip is to pop out the top plastic fixing from the door glass that bolts to the window mech frame and just pop it back in once the glass is in the door gap,, this will stop it from getting caught on the weather strip on re install.
once you have tightened the 3 x 10 mm screws to the mech frame to lock the window in place re fit the window stoppers with the rubber to the bottom of the L piece( you would be surprised on how many fit it to the top wrongly) now at this point "DO NOT" tighten the stopper bolts up tight just leave them finger tight for the minute.
Now wind your window up be it manual or electric to the stop point and now tighten the stopper solid, bring the door glass up and down a few times to make sure it is at the right stop position, adjust again if needed.

Now it is just a case of putting everything back together again as removed, no more rattling annoying door glass.

As is the norm ,any questions please feel free to get in touch.
