Mk2 suspension on a Mk1

Postby Yolo » Wed Apr 30, 2014 11:44 pm

After fitting Mk2 Suspension over the winter I felt the car was riding a bit to high. I left it a while and it did settle a bit but still has a good gap between the wheel and the arch so I thought I would try something that a wise old man told me to do.....( you know who you are) This is what I got up to.

The problem is that when I rebuilt the suspension and wishbones everything was attached to the car and tightened when it was off the ground so the weight dragged everything down.

The theory is to overcome this I should take the wheels off, loosen everything again and then jack it up to put it under pressure as if it was on its wheels and then re-tighten.
so here goes.

Up on stands safety first

Then start to loosen of what was put back on

Top long bolt - 21mm and a pig to loosen util i realised that a plug socket fits here perfectly

Then the droplink and bottom bolt holding the strut in place

Then the upper ball joint - not sure I had to do this but as it was off before it slackened it again

Once these were loose I then used the scissor jack to raise the suspension until it just started to raise off the jack stand

I didn't loosen the alignment bolts as they were going to be sorted once it went for alignment

So now everything has been cracked loose and jacked up carefully!!!! it's time to tighten thing back up

I then moved to the back and did the same thing again

Once everything is up and safely supported it's time to crack things loose

Upper back wishbone three bolts all loosened

Then the bottom wishbone to hub, bottom strut and the droplink bolts

Not as much to mess with at the back, once again jack under the wishbone until it just comes off the jack stand on that side and re-tighten everything.

After I had all this done I took it for a nice drive over every bumpy county road around me just to make sure everything was as it should be and to help the settling.

Today it went for an alignment and I have to say it feels great. It soaks up the bumps and steers so directly it feels like a new car so whether this all helped settle things or not time will tell but I am happy. :) :handgestures-thumbup: :auto-layrubber:

I hope this helps anyone that wants to try this if its not considered to risky
