Replacing a Mk 1 Auto selector bushes

Postby Mazda Mender » Thu Feb 05, 2015 10:46 pm

A lot of Mk1 MX-5, Eunos, Miata, Roaster owners with Auto gearboxes will hit the problem of worn gear selector bushes, that can also bring on wear on other parts of the selector and in some cases stopping the Roadster from starting.

Loose auto gear shaft selector....

There are new selector bushes available from Autolinkmx5.... http://www.autolinkmx5.com/gear-lever-b ... c-98-p.asp to cure the problem which have had these made as they are not available any more through Mazda and were supplied to me for this guide. Now I will not lie, it is a fiddly pig of a job to do, but once done will make it far better to use and to be enjoyed.
It can be done without getting under the Roadster; remove the centre arm rest section with the by 5 x Phillips head screws, unplug all the electric plugs to the selector, remove the 4 x Phillips head screws that hold the gear selector indication cover, unbolt the cable, unbolt the 4 x 10 mm bolts that holds the base of the unit to the gearbox tunnel and lift the selector unit up from the gearbox tunnel. The selector arm is connected by a joint and locking pin to the rod/link arm that runs off to the gearbox, which you can lift up and separate the joint and locking pin. Tie some string to the link arm and tie it up so that it easy to find when refitting back up.
Take the selector unit out of the roadster, and take it inside to the kitchen table or into the man cave work bench. Leave it where it is and get a brew done you will need it, and the swear jar and lets get back to it.....

The unit.....

Remove the rubber lower boot by pushing out the 4 x inserts and then pushing the boot out off the frame and off the arm...

As you can see there is not a lot left but dust from the old fibre bushes, which all needs to be removed once taken apart....

Next you need to undo the bolt (14mm) and the nut (12mm) and remove them....

Now you need to unbolt the solenoid from the base by way of 2 x Phillips head bolts and 2 x 7mm nuts, once unbolted just leave it hanging free and clear....

You should now be able to manoeuvre the gear shift up and out from the main body, it will get fiddly, and then it is just a case of cleaning everything up as the old fibre bushes will be dust and stuck fast in places. It all needs to be removed for when the new poly bushes go in. Personally I rebuild using red rubber grease for this, once clean just insert the new bushes....

Once the new bushes are in then it is time to rebuild back up and manoeuvre everything back into place. Watch the sensor wire that runs under the gear the gear shift selector.

Now the bolt and nut need to go through, tighten up tight, don't kill it - it's not holding a diff in place - and nip off a smidge. Personally I also clean the body of the bolt up with some emery paper to get it back smooth again before fitting and applying some red rubber grease again....

Then it is time to refit the electric solenoid and line it up onto the pin before bolting down using the two Phillips head bolts and 7mm nuts. Remember it is a plastic body so do not over tighten...

Once bolted back together, check that the gear change movement is not solid and adjust as needed with the bottom gear shift bolt. A fellow owner binned the OE bolt and fitted a nylon nut for more adjustment and peace of mind, which is not a bad idea but personally I have never had a problem reusing the old nut again. Refit the bottom rubber boot pushing the corner lugs into the body of the gear selector (they work like a grommet with a lip to hold it in place) and then re-insert the metal guide pins.

All done ready for the boot cover and refitting to the Roadster....

Go and fit it back to your Roadster and you will thank me for the tip on tying the gear box selector rod so it is easy to get again to re-attach to the selector gear shift arm. Bang the knuckle and locking pin back in and bolt it all back down with the 4 x 10mm bolts to the gearbox tunnel. Plug everything back in and screw the cover back down in place with the 4 x Phillips head screws and re fit your centre trim/arm rest and go give her a blast.

Well done you  :handgestures-thumbup:
