Mk 1 upgrade to a MK 2 cooling fan

Postby Mazda Mender » Sat Oct 24, 2015 6:25 pm

Mk 1 fans can fail without notice or play some very stupid games and in most cases weak and intermittent , the mod that was popular was to use a Mk 1 auto cooling fan on a manual as it is a bigger more powerful motor, but that can suffer the same as the manuals, where as the Mk 2 fans are more powerful and don't suffer with the failings of the Mk 1 motors.
This is a simple upgrade which is easy and cheap to do and will benefit the roadster, a quick shout to Andrew at Autolinkmx5 to see if he had any and is his reply was....." I have shed loads Wayne, they never go wrong"
So here is a quick "how to"...

Remove the cooling fan from the Roadster, an import should have 2 fans, looking in from the front the fan on the right ( the bigger fan of the two) is the cooling fan and the one on the left is the A/C fan (the smaller of the two), if it is a UK spec MX 5 chances are you only have the one on the right hand side anyway (cooling fan) see pics below....

Unplug the power plug on the right hand side off the cooling fan ,undo the two 10mm head bolts that hold the cooling fan to the rad at the top and remove, next you will need to undo the two bottom 10mm head bolts, this can be done from underneath through the inspection flap on the under tray, you will need to jack the passenger side front up to make things easier and drop her on a axle stand and wedge the wheels with the handbrake on, now you do not need to remove the 10mm head bolts all the way out as the housing has a cut out which drops onto the bolts as you will see from the pics below.
Once you have loosened the two 10mm head bolts, you should be able to pull the cooling fan clear of the engine bay and rad to work on.

Now you will need to undo the MK 1's fan blades by using a 8mm socket, once removed pull the fan blades free from the motor, we will not be needing this again.

Next is the removal of the fan motor which is held in place by 3 x 8mm head bolts, they have a phillips head to, don't do this with a driver as most have been on a while and in some cases 25 years, remove the bolts and put to one side.

Cut the cable to the Mk 1 fans motor as we will be reusing it, fan blades, motor removed leaving the loom and plug with housing..

Next you will need to remove all the bits from the the MK 2 cooling fan housing which is the same as the above except for the cutting of the loom, which i will explain later, put everything to one side as we will be needing everything.

The differences between the Mk 1 (top) and the Mk 2 (bottom) cooling fan housings...

So now we need to fit the Mk 2 items to the MK 1 housing. Important...... when buying a Mk 2 fan unit to convert it to go on a MK 1 you MUST make sure that you also get the loom plug from the roadster side with some loom as you will be joining this to the MK 1 plug and loom to make up a patch lead so it is plug and play....

Right now this is important also, because the motors sit different in the housings it is a direct fit reusing the 3 x OE 8mm head bolts on the MK 1 housing but it must be fitted at a angle (the MK 2's plug will not sit straight up), now i have sitting to the left on the housing if you wish you could remove the cable lugs so it will sit to the right , your choice....

Add the 3 x 10mm head bolts and tighten to torque setting ...tight

Now to add the MK 2 fan blade to the motor once again using your 8mm socket to torque to the setting......tight....

Now we need to turn the housing etc. over so we can solder the two plugs and looms together to make it a plug and play patch lead, now you can use crimp connections etc. your choice but for what it is and how important it is soldering or lead loading together makes a lot more sense...

The blue wire from the MK 1 plug goes to the yellow wire on the MK 2 plug and the black wires on both join together....

Heat shrink can be used but needs to be but on before soldering, make the whole patch lead nice and neat with some electrical auto tape, use rip ties/cable ties where needed making sure you nip off what is not needed....

Now just refit it back onto your Roadster or Mx 5 the same way as you removed making sure you apply some copper slip to those lower and upper 10mm head bolts, once in place and bolted back up nice and tight, plug the fan into the roadsters side loom, this should take you all of a hour and is one of the best upgrades you could do to help your roadster live longer.
As normal if there is anything you are unsure of please ask, it's what we are here for.
Stay safe and think safe.
