Tools needed...
1 x medium phillps turner outer
1 x trim tool or flat medium screw driver
1 x utility knife
1 x Hard Top ( HT ) aftermarket rubber edge trim from Autolinkmx5 .... http://www.autolinkmx5.com/hardtop-rear ... 4660-p.asp
The problem with the OE trim is that it is a hard plastic, which over time becomes brittle and cracks, the biggest issue is when a HT is being sprayed and trying to save the OE one is like catching water in a seive, forget it, and getting a OE one ( which needs to be carried carefully) will just end up going the same way, so Andy from Autolink went on a search for something easier and better, now i have had these on my personal HT for many years and is still like new and flexible, it is easy enough to fit and this guide will walk you through it, a warm or hot day will help to make the trim easier to play with...
Lay a soft thick sheet on the ground which needs to be around the same size as the HT as we do not want to damage the paint...
Turn the HT onto it's roof, remove the 2 x phillips screws with your turner outer that holds the side window seal in place, then lift the deck seal up so you can remove the plastic hard top edge trim piece, do the same on both sides...
Once you have removed the OE edge finisher that is now in a million bits...get your new rubber trim...
Offer it up to the edge of the HT with the plastic trim edge piece, there is a recess, so start to push the new rubber edge trim onto the HT once you are happy with the start point, the new rubber trim piece might need a little help as it is a thick edge, so use the trim tool or flat screw diver to help open it up a little, don't go mad as we do not want to mark the rubber trim or HT and then carry on pushing it into place until you get to the rear chrome deck latch ,do not pull to hard as you push this on as it will stretch if to heavy handed, which will then shrink back into shape over time...
Now feed it under the top of the latch, get your utility knife or marker and just MARK where the latch is on the rubber trim( please watch your hand and fingers )...
Now DO NOT cut all the way through and all the way up, you could use a good set of scissors for this if you are unsure about using a utility knife, so you need to cut half way up before the curve of the rubber trim piece and then right along it's length and remove that one piece..View pictures...
And just just carry on pushing it into place it might need some gentle help to open it up...
Carry on pushing the rubber trim onto the edge until you hit the other rear chrome latch and do the same again with the marking up and cutting out...
And just carry on around to the end on the other side, offer up the plastic edge trim to see where you need to cut it and then trim off any extra, remember there is a recess on the edge trime for the new rubber trim to fit underneath...
Push it all into place ,add the plastic edge trim, push the rear deck seal back in place, put the window seal back into place and re-secure with the 2 x philips head screws with your turner inner, do the same on the other side, and thats it all done, turn the HT back over, and re-fit it to your Roadster...
Thanks to Andrew at Autolinkmx5 for letting us try the trim out ...
As the norm ,if you have any question please just ask, it's what we are here for...
