MK 2/2.5 Mx/Roadster hitch/tow bar, for bike carries ;0)

Postby Mazda Mender » Fri Jul 26, 2013 7:00 am

I'll try my best to explain where everything has come from and how they gelled together to work here and my photo's will hopefully with being in high res will also help.
1)- The hitch bar: This came from Moss in the USA it was cheaper to order it from there than from here. The reason I picked this one was because there was no need to do any cutting out of the rear bumper
Mk 1..... https://mossmiata.com/hide-away-hitches ... 8&aid=1098
MK 2.....https://mossmiata.com/1999-2005-miata/e ... y-hard-dog
2)- A trip to the local auto factors or the bay of E for the socket, wiring, socket bracket and a stainless steel guard while waiting for the hitch bar to arrive.
3)- A tow ball with a thread which I ordered from a company called Northern Tool & Equipment, (but can also be gotten off the bay of E etc) item is a 19mm towing ball. Tel 0845 605 2266 http://www.northerntooluk.com/trailer-p ... 1191E.html http://www.northerntooluk.com/trailer-p ... 1191E.html or search e-Bay.
I'm sure if you shop around you will be able to find items 2 & 3 cheaper elsewhere, maybe even flea bay.
4)-Now when it arrives you will need a grinder to cut out a square in the guard (hopefully you will see this in the pic's)and a little bit of cutting of the socket bracket.
5)-Now with it being a hitch bar they are supposed to work on a pin system to hitch up the trailer. The l shape needs to be at the top now not at the bottom like the USA.
Now you will need to drill the hole bigger to take the tow ball thread (if you get a 22mm threaded ball only) and before you tighten it up you will also need to mark up and cut out the square on the guard so you can slide it on (this will need to be welded on) hope you can see this in the photo's and then tighten the tow ball up.
6)-Now we turn back to the main fixing bar to the roadster, the socket bracket will need to be welded on either side to take the electrics, this is where the little bit of cutting is needed on the bracket only (hope you can see this from the photo's, and goes with out saying that once all the welding is done, put some Hammerite smooth black paint on it for protection or similar .
7)-Now you will need to fit the bar to the car, you will need to drop the exhaust (only drop it from the rubber supports, use a bit of silicon spray to help them pull out easier) at the back to give you room to drill (make sure you support it with a bit of string) you my need another pair of hands from here on in. Offer the bar up and mark the holes for drilling dropping the bar out of the way you will need to drill the 4 holes needed, this is where the extra hands come in first so they can hold the exhaust out of the way so you can drill both sides
8)-Bolt up the bar, refit the exhaust, and fit the socket all that is left to do is to secure the wire with cable ties and bring it into the rear of the car through a rubber grommet and just wire it in, remember when connecting the wiring to solder them in so it is more solid.
It does sound like a lot of work but once you have done it you will see that it is not that hard, just a bit of messing, but its great once fitted plus the ball part can be stowed away in the boot when not in use, which you should be able to see from the photo's. There is also one of my MK1 with a "only when needed" Hitch/tow bar fitted from moss USA which I use so often, so when the MK2 arrived I wanted one for her also, so i went on a mission, and I won.

If you need anything else please just get in touch, if you need to know how to connect the electrics up just let me now.

PICS TO BE ADDED SOON
Notice Stuff :coffee: It is not legal in the UK to tow with the MK2/2.5 as it was never issued with a towing weight from new, so please be aware of this, although it can be fitted and used as a bike carrier  :handgestures-thumbup:

This is the MK 1 NA removable version hitch bar from the states, which I prefer simply because it is neater and you can add it as and when needed.
