Mk 1 wiper arm linkage on to a Mk 2

Postby Mazda Mender » Tue Aug 13, 2013 8:47 pm

For those Mk 2/2.5 owners with wiper linkage problems, loose, wobbly, squeaky noisy wipers in use, then forget replacing with another Mk 2 linkage, get yourself a Mk 1 linkage, far better made for the job and should last the life of the roadster better then the MK 2 unit.
Be warned as there will be a lot of opening and closing the bonnet to do this.

First off you will need to remove the wiper arms, pull the rubber grommets off to reveal a 12mm nut which will be undone with a 12mm socket and ranchet, once the nuts are removed wiggle and push up and down to release the arm from the splined shaft...

So the next step is to remove the trim covers two oval ones at each end and 5 x circle ones inbetween that cover the Phillips head screws seven in total ,( personally i find it far easier to just drill the centre of the caps and pop them out so you do not mark up the scuttle panel and the caps so the look terrible when finished and re-fitted, new caps are easy bought from the bay of E and Mx5 suppliers of parts , and you can still get them from Mazda dealerships for a couple of £'s, but it is down to personal choice i just think it looks better without digging marks)......

Now you can remove the 7 x phillips head screws that hold the Plastic skuttle in place and remove the skuttle out of the way, note that the two phillips head screws at the end are different from the centre 5 x centre ones.........

Now you need to pop the knuckle off the motor and undo the 10mm nuts that hold the wiper arm cogs in place, two on each cog and then remove the old wiper linkage from the roadster....

These pics are to show the differences between the Mk 1 wiper linkage and the Mk 2 linkage. Note that the Mk 1 held in place with 4 x 10mm bolts from above where as the Mk 2 unit has studs which come from behind and held by 4 x 10mm nuts also the centre linkage are the other way around this makes no difference when fitted other than the MK 1 linkage is far better made......

Now offer up the MK1 linkage and secure with the 4 x 10mm bolts and pop the knuckle back on the motor, give it all a good spray of silicon lube spray, re-fit the plastic skuttle and screw trim covers and reset the wiper arms in place with the 12mm nuts and pop the rubber grommet cover back on the wiper arms, test that the wipers do a sweep and park in the correct place, if not adjust by undoing the 12mm not and re-setting....
