Thanks for the replies folks.

Firstly chill! New metal was welded in after all the rust was cut out. The inner was whole although rusty. It was wirebrushed rust treated and etch-primed. A steel plate was made to size and welded in. The fibres you see were from the glass reinforced filler we use to smooth over and seal welded plates. Normal filler was used to get the shape back. We have been repairing cars a long time although this is the first MX5. The other side was exactly the same and you would have to look pretty closely to see the repairs now. Back when I was a student I was an artist with filler. I got a few rusty cars through MOTs with dodgy repairs. Now we have a MIG!
The big job has been the front chassis on both sides around the ARB brackets. Drivers side has a lot of new metal in and the N/S is being built up now. I am sure the chassis repair sections would have made the job a lot quicker but we have time on our hands.
Today I spent a lot of time wirebrushing and chipping off rust from the wheel well since the suspension is off. The crappy underseal seems to have kept water in rather than out and it just peels off to expose the rusty surfaces. It will all be rust treated, etched and then stone chipped. I take it that this is normal for Mk 2s?

Since everyone is a critic! Here is the other side.

Rust cut out and new plate welded in. Some filler has been thrown on for shape.

Sanded down etch-primed and stonechipped. At some point we will paint it back to the body colour. probably when everything else is done.

Now I know we aren't at professional standard of finishing but the repairs are as good as any. This will sail through a MOT and be good for years. I know people can get really fussy about their cars but this is a fun car not a show car. It will be getting pounded in gravel car parks and highland roads in March. All we need is a solid car with an acceptable finish that can be easily maintained in our home garage. I will be trying to get a good finish with the final paint but I am not going to spend a lot of money on it as it is likely it will get damaged so cheap and cheerful it is. The welding is proper though!
