Dont believe what has happened now. Took the ecu off on saturday, stripped it down and sprayed with wd40(other releasing agents are available(. Put it back on yesterday and still not starting. Took all the steering column apart yesterday afternoon and removed the immobiliser. It has a dry joint, so i thought, what the hell. It came to work with me today and i opened it up, sprayed with the same stuff, and put it back together. Came home, put the immobiliser back on and plugged everything in again. She now fires up first time everytime, even if i take the key out and lock the door, then unlock it and put the key back in. I am just going to start her up again now, 2 hours after last starting her. I think i may just be a genius for doing this, and the mrs is soooooooo grateful. But i have a new one(second hand) one on the way, so i will either sell it on or keep it just in case. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Hello,

My 2001 mk2.5 1.8 has a very similar issue that I'm trying to solve: it randomly cranks but doesn't fire and there is no spark. The two OBDII code readers I got says there are no faults.
Randomly, and less frequently now, it would start and run just fine. And the last time I started I took it for a drive to warm-up, parked back home and tried to restart several times. It worked 2 times after short ignition off periods, then after a ~30second ignition off time, it wouldn't fire and it hasn't since. No spark, no fuel smell in the exhaust. No codes.

So I'm about to tackle the immobiliser.
Could you please describe in more detail what you did with the steering column parts of the immobiliser? Was it just a matter of taking apart, cleaning and putting back together?

Yes, quite simple, just follow the instructions in the manual, or there is a how to on this forum which is very easy to follow. the immobiliser has a dry joint, just be careful when trying to pry the small clips apart. Mine didnt break, but they are very flimsy.

Welcome to the menders.

Did you check the earth terminal (body to battery)?

Try removing the main fuse and cheking if it is clean and has no corrosion.

Is the passenger footwell carpet dry? Peel it back an have a feel to be 100% sure. A wet ecu could be a culprit too.
