Just bought a Mk2.5 MX5 - need some advice please

Postby Squib » Sun Mar 17, 2019 7:35 pm

Hello everyone!

I've recently bought a 2002 MX5 1.8 Sport.
It's been making some grinding noises when the clutch is pressed in - I reckon it might be the pilot bearing.
Since, the gearbox will be taken out it's probably a good idea to get the whole clutch replaced.
I would love to do the work myself but unfortunately do not have the space/equipment or time at the moment.
What is a good price for a clutch replacement and do you know of any good garages around the Manchester area that you could recommend?
I'm also looking at getting it wax injected - similarly any recommendations would be much appreciated.

At present I don't have a garage to keep it in, would you recommend a cover to keep the rain off?

Many Thanks,
Squib

The gearbox would need to be removed and the clutch the get to the pilot bearing...personally i would replace the clutch ,pilot and release bearing. And also the rear crank seal while it is all apart.
Have you had her checked over before thinking about injecting the box sections.

Thank you for the reply :)
Yeah, I agree it's probably a good idea to replace it all whilst the gearbox is out. I didn't think about the crank seal, thanks for that.
I haven't had a look at the inside of the sills yet but was thinking of buying a cheap boroscope that I could use to have a look inside.

The chassis rails looked good from what I could see from the engine bay and wheel arches. What's the best way to get a better look at them?
