Road tax

Postby agent_orange » Wed Jan 15, 2014 1:24 pm

Often debated topic I know, and something usually I just take on the chin.

Now I know thanks to some drunken f*ck w*t I have to keep a close eye on the pennies, but my road tax renewal for 2014 is £280

Thats £20 cheaper than my insurance quote!!! How the flying f*ck does that work out.

Yes I know we've lied to informed that its all about Co2 emissions, but Im sorry! Even though our little 5's dont have the kind of advanced engine management that a brand new car in a show room might have. But how on earth can a 1.8litre with a cat possibly produce that much Co2?? Especially in comparison to what else is out there... or has someone really paid over £500 to tax a 4x4??? I think not.

Oh and dont get me started on these grubby new diesels that actually belch out plumes of smoke whenever the driver hits the gas.

Aiii Karumba!! That has got to cost more than your insurance.

And for the record, those kind of 4x4's I dont mind. Its the tractors that will never see a speck of mud in their entire life that wind me up.

Actually... I don't mind paying my share - after all if it doesn't come from car tax, it will have to come from income tax, or council tax or whatever...

What I DO mind a LOT is that I pay my share...and then the b@stards don't even bother fixing the roads, so I then have to spend the same again on tyres and shocks and bushes all the time.

The most annoying figure in the world is that the roads budget is only 10% of the revenue they get from car tax.

Must admit I do cringe when I have to stump up £475 for my Japanese 4x4 probably made in Sunderland, but she does all the hard work towing either the Speed Shuttle or the 25' Caravan and does it without even knowing they are on the back.

The thing that gets up my nose about Road Tax is that it is supposed to be based on CO2 emmisions. I pay £450, but only do 5000 miles, but some rep in his diesel pays £250 but does 5 times my mileage. He will definitely produce more CO2 than me over the year..

EXACTLY!! :bow-yellow:

Its a "ROAD" tax, not a Pollution fine. And the state of our roads frankly shambolic.

The only fair way to have a "pollution" tax is on the fuel. Yes I know that will bomb up the prices (which are corruptly inflated anyways), but then atleast its a fair reflection on the usage of the vehicle.

I guess the argument is that when you are in the showroom, the prospect of £500 a year vs £150 a year will make you choose the eco model... And to be fair, we do need some encouragement - and the price of fuel certainly doesn't seem to work, just as the price of fags and beer doesn't make much difference. I reckon only when Mad Max comes true will we all start looking seriously at the alternatives.

All the same, it would be only fair if they spent at least some of it on these godawful roads. Even worse, round these 'ere parts, is when you get stuck behind a (farm) tractor leaving an ice-rink of mud behind it, bellowing out soot and making everyone late for work...is that they get it all for nothing!!!

Like most on here, I own more than one car, but find it impossible to drive two at once, yet I have to pay to have them all insured and taxed so that in the event I decide to take one of them out it doesn't give the old bill and excuse to pull me over.

Time we paid an annual registration fee and that they stick an extra penny or two on fuel to cover our use of the roads as and when we use them, sounds fair to me. Use it pay for it.

Whinge over, back to the rugby!!! while I contemplate what I am going to do next to try to resolve my engine fault on the Sport.

1993 1.6 Eunos Roadster (gone)
1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
