Fitting a Bosch S5 battery to the Mk2

Postby guitaristanime » Mon Feb 20, 2023 10:22 am

Hi

In an effort to move away from the gel mat Panasonic battery, I wanted to fit a Bosch S5 with as little effort as possible. Using the details from Wayne's Mk1 guide, I repurposed and retrofitted the same to my Mk2. Feel free to re-use this in the same thread.
I couldn't post as a reply there as I'm not allowed apparently :)

The main difference with the Mk2 is the battery is kept in a well, rather than at the same level as the boot floor as on the Mk1.

To this end, I wanted to find a way to replicate the battery tray that comes as stock. With the larger Bosch battery, it will not fit the stock Mk2 tray.
So off I went to Ikea in search of a tray or tub that might fit.

Behold the £1 Ikea "Nojig" tray

Test fit the battery and it fits perfectly.

Test fit the box in the well. Like a glove!

I didn't snap any pictures of the battery tie down bar unfortunately. But I removed the carry handle on the battery by simply unclipping it, and then removed the outer most "L bracket" from the tie down bar by using a cutting tool.

I then re-welded the bracket as pictured below:

Finally, I added some paint to the tie down bar to stop it rusting. Then, using the instructions in the Mk1 thread, I attached the vent tubes using the tube from a pump action bottle, some boiling water and some patience.

I will add this to the guide Ben , thank you for taking the time to do this for others buddy.
I will be getting a good number of those trays, but there is another way in which to use the battery clamp without the need to cut and weld on a MK 2/2.5 which i will add to this as another option.
