Travelling to France in Mk4 - Headlight deflectors

Postby knighty77 » Fri Mar 06, 2020 11:01 pm

I am new to owning a Mk4 and also LED lights . The coming summer we are driving to my Sister's in France and because of LED's wondered if deflectors were needed or of a different type to one I've always used. i Googled the question and one site the answers varied from no because they are a flat beam and also a thought that the Mk4 knows what country it's in and adjusts as necessary ? Another person did not have a mark on the headlight showing the centre of the beam therefore deflectors not needed but mine does so I am confused.
I have my lights set on auto and when I start the car there is a movement from left to right' what i call a blink, as if it may be thinking about something like what country it's in.
Anyone have any knowledge on this please.
Thanks. Knighty

Not an MX5 I appreciate, but my VW Tiguan has LED headlights which also dance about when turned on at night before settling.
When we go abroad they can be set for RH drive from within the onscreen menu, I can also opt for distance & speed in kilometers.
Don't own a 4, but my wife's Mazda 2 also has an extensive range of menu options are there similar in your car?

Hope you get it sorted,
Dave

Thanks for the replies. I will have a look at the handbook and on screen menus to see if it is possble to adjust them, I never thought of that.

Just spent a fair while sat in the car reading the handbook and looking for anything on the touch screen or info button but found nothing. I have found that the "blinking" I mentioned is probably caused by the Adaptive Front Lighting Sytem (AFS) which adjusts the beams to left or right when you turn the steering wheel but as it will move to the left when you you turn the wheel that way I guess that would be no good for driving on the other side of the road.
I have found Eurolites site which gives up to date instructions for fitting their deflectors and it does show how to fit their deflectors for MX5s from July 2015 onward which must be the Mk4. From that the assumption is that delectors are needed.
Hope this will be helpful for other Mk4 owners who have the same question.
Thanks.

The site I went to was
http://www.motoring-into-europe.co.uk/fitting
On the righthand side of the page under latest fitting information click "Download" for the latest list of vehicles

I should have entered this info in my previous reply.
