Offside caliper now off car being cleaned, wirebrushed and so forth. This was the side that did not have a problem, however this caliper is in a much worse state. One of the slider pin rubbers has a hole in it, and the corrosion has gone beyond the piston rubber, with pitting on the piston, and a small chunk missing from it!! Easy to see how moisture has got in there and caused corrosion.

So although I will put it back together now, and back on the car, I suspect that I am actually going to have to renew at least the piston and rubbers. By that point, would it be cheaper to get a whole new/reconditioned calliper?

Money money money. Hm. I can see your point.

A new piston on its own would do, until I have been right around the car perhaps to see the state of play elsewhere. I shall ponder further...

Fitting a refurbed caliper is far quicker and easier, and less messier then fettling with your own, but remember that a refurbed caliper is only some one else that has taken it apart to do what you are going to be doing to your old unit, and you pay for it, it is down to saving and having a proper mending session.
Now there are cheap calipers on e-bay,which are cheap chinese copies and i really do not recommend wasting your cash on them,
it is like anything else cash or choice.

New kit from Autolink might well be the way to go then. I'd rather keep the thing on the road myself if I can!

I have no intention of buying a cheap chinese caliper, but I am intrigued - how bad are they?

NB you might want to take my badge back off me for not understanding the copper washers where the brake pipe attaches to the calliper. Ooops. Spongy pedal in minutes!

LOL
The guide for the brake strip and rebuild will be so much better to follow once all the pic's have been added, which will be built from me, M-m Junior and Fleas input together, so then you will not miss the copper washers ;0)

M-m jnr might want to change the bit regarding jacking up the front of the car to change the rear calipers too! :laughing-rolling:

There were another couple of things I thought of, and I will note them down in a PM to Flea in due course.

Quick additional query on handbrake adjustment - the general advice appears to be use the hex screw to lock the rear wheel and then back of about half a turn.

That seems to leave a lot of friction, and the wheel is fairly immobile. Any thoughts on this?

It's more of a guide line, lock it up FT and just wind it off until the pads are just touching ,depending on pads ,disc, age etc it could be a 1/4 of a turn to 3/4 of a turn, just work on that the pads need to be just catching the disc and you can not go wrong.

Also, if you have just fitted new pads the surface will be a touch rough. This will polish off to a smooth surface quickly.
It's only a preset to get the handbrake adjustment right anyway. It'll sort itself out after a few miles.
