Fan belt

Postby steveomac » Mon Sep 23, 2013 4:18 pm

Hi All,

how do I go about tightening the fan belt, with the cooler weather it now squeals for a bit when I start up.

Many thanks

Loosen the top & bottom bolts on the alternator & then adjust the tension bolt at the side. Then tighten both bolts back up.

Don't forget to also loosen the adjuster block prior to tensioning the belt, otherwise you'll bend the adjuster bolt.

Whilst you are there you might want to pop a spot of copper slip on the adjuster bolt to keep it free for next time!

We're assuming you know how to check tension?

Indeed...a squeaky belt is either a sign of poor tension, or a worn out belt. If the tension is correct but it still squeals, you need a new belt.

At the centre of the longest run of the belt, you should just be able to turn it 90deg using your finger and thumb. Don't overtighten to compensate for a worn belt as you'll kill your alternator bearings.

tnx all - job done - sucessfully I think, slackened off bolt holding the alt in place then turned the adjuster bolt until the belt was similar to the other belt.
then did the holding bolt up again :)

saved me a trip to garage - thank all.
