General Maintenance Help!

Postby ElliottW » Fri May 22, 2015 11:41 am

My 1.8 MK3.5 has just gone out of warranty and I'm looking to learn some maintenance skills by doing some things myself. Does anyone have any does and don'ts for what to do myself? I'm looking at starting with basics such as filters, fluids and brake pads and leaving the bigger jobs (coilovers) to the professionals!

Also what fluids do people recommend for engine, brakes and gearbox/diff?

Sorry if this seems a bit simple minded and noddy, but I've never really had the opportunity to tinker with the car before now and don't want to do something that will harm my pride and joy!

Thanks
Elliott

Service items you can get from Andrew at Autolink with the discount off here, Servicing is simple enough, as long as you have the correct tools and being safe...
60,000 is plug change
air filter each year or miles
5/30 fully synth 5ltrs each year or miles
Oil filter each year or miles
I good check over, and thats about it, oil filter can be a pain as you need to get it from underneath and remove the shield, chain (timing) is when it becomes noisey, so years and years away, waste a good couple of tins of silicon lube spray on all the rubber joints etc, And check the drop links as they are a really poor design and last around 2 years.

The scuttle grommets just below the wipers can need resealing, if so buy new ones and replace and use some bathroom silicon sealer.

They can leak on to the electrics underneath and cause havoc.

Antifreeze is 12 year change but brake fluid still needs changed every two years takes a bit more than a litre of Dot4.

Rear calipers need the pistons wound in for new pads do not try to force them in, a wind in tool is handy and the pin on the pad backplate goes into the top of the cross in the piston.

Not the case with the front calipers, the pistons on them just push in after a pad change

Mkae sure the slide pins have plenty read rubber grease not coperslip that is for the lugs on the sides of the backplate.

Thanks very much for the info Eddie! Do you have any preferences/recommendations for brands of brake fluid or oils? Was thinking of using Castrol GTX or Magnatec for the engine, but I have no clue for any others!

Those oils will be fine buddy, as long as the brake fluid is the right DOT rated there is no preference really on make, as for the 12 year antifreeze? i will look into that.
