Oil Pressure Gauge

Postby Rolyan » Mon Jun 18, 2012 12:39 pm

I'm just getting used to driving my first MX5 (2005 Arctic 1.8) and I'm keeping my eye on the gauges etc.

I've read somewhere that the oil pressure gauge is not a real gauge its more of a switch and simply means there is pressure. The actual reading doesn't mean anything. Is this correct?

What should the oil pressure gauge and the coolant temp gauge read on a 'normal' drive i.e. long eough to get warmed up and driven for a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks for your help.

The oil gauge is effectively a light i.e. it's on or off.
The water temp should be somewhere around vertical when fully warmed up. It's not linear though. It stays low for a while then jumps up to above cold then again to warm and finally to hot.
If it overheats it will show a bit above normal for a while then jump to past the red by which time there will be steam everywhere.

Don't worry about the gauges though, just enjoy driving it :D

HA! I've just swapped my MGF for the MX5 so that's why I worry about the gauges. If you drive an MGF you get paranoid believe me. That's why I wanted to know about the coolant temp gauge, that's a real biggie in the MG.

Sure am enjoying driving the 5 at the moment. Really glad I got it and loving the drive. Amazing how a tank can go in 24 hours. 8-)

I think I only ever look at my gauges when I'm on track. Mind you, now I have the big aluminium twin-cooler I rarely look at them when on track either :D

Ste
Wait until you call here buddy, and i'll show you, i have my oil pressure gauge working in one of my Mk 2's,the other is waiting to be done, and as for the Temp gauge ,they were the same from day one, they are dampered, so you DON'T get a true reading,so if? it should ever move from dead centre? pull over quick as your head is about to melt, not scare mungering, just being honest, you can put an after market gauge in as i have done in all of mine, just for piece of mind to see a gauge that does rise with the temp and fall again as she cools, but yours is in VERY good nick and well serviced,so you should have nothing to worry about.

You can't scare me I'm ex MGF

You're dead right about it being in good nick, it feels like a new car. Toyos are being fitted today but no one seems interested in waxoiling the box section, too mucky apparently.

See you Saturday, should be there 9.30 ish depending on traffic.
