Totally Puzzled

Postby dikki10 » Sun Jul 17, 2016 4:37 pm

OK here's what happened - rear blowout driver side rear, not shredded but instant deflation at around 55 / 60 followed by a few miles on the space saver to the next junction and getting a new tyre done.

What it's doing now is I have a real random clunking coming from the rear with a buzz type humming undertone - it ' feels' like its around the vicinity of that wheel but underneath - The car doesn't feel stable, there's a feel of slight wandering and the clunking varies in how loud, how regular and at it's worst almost feels like there's a momentary sticking of the rear wheel but that could be just from the jarring sensation it sends through the car. The noise itself is more metallic but a kind of muffled thunk. If it wasn't for the other symptoms I described I'd almost think it was the exhaust or the rear wheel not on properly ( but I check the nuts were tight ) . This is to the extent I've stopped driving the car as it doesn't feel safe ...

Obviously I've had it looked at and there's nothing obvious broken looking or hanging off the Garage told me the rear bushes are all shot and the rear shocks are leaking all over. ( None of which made advisories on the last MOT 6 months back but OK ). What I am not convinced of though is even with the bushes / shocks needing doing that doesn't strike me as what would be the cause of this issue which didn't start till the blow out. Shocks and bushes are a wear out type of fault and wouldn't give the symptoms above would they ?

Sorry it all sounds so vague but I just wondered if anyone else has had anything like this and if so what it was or some idea's as I've never stripped the rear suspension so not a part I'm an expert on. It's going to cost me obviously to sort the bushes and rear shocks and I'm not entirely confident that's the cause of this problem (albeit it won't hurt to do them of course. )

Thoughts anyone ?

Yours desperately

Rich

Far from an expert but I know from experience that the suspension parts on this car have a big impact on the handling and shot bushes in particular will give wayward handling. The noise sounds like it could be something like a bearing that may have gone at the same time as your blowout but hard to tell with seeing it. Have you jacked it up and spun the wheel to see if you can replicate the noise?
