Can an under 17yr old get on track.

Postby nedski » Sun Oct 13, 2013 9:47 pm

My son has bought his first mx5. Is there a way he can get on track at 16.
If not it will be an 8 month track build until his driving test. If he passes lol

Thumbs up for choice of car though. I'll get some pics when we collect it.

I'm assuming he wants to drive his MX-5? In that case I think he might struggle to get on a track day. All the ones I have been on require a drivers licence to be able to take part.

Call MSVT, they'll answer, but I'd say for road car on track, 17, as the web I go says sign on with driving licence.

Can't answer for track days but I suspect that the min is 17 with a RTA licence. (probably down to insurances/liability etc.)

For Motorsport in the UK firstly see link to MSA min ages for competition pages:-
http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/msa_forms/bluebooks/13/124_141_Common_Regulations_for_Competitors_%28Licences%29_%28H%29.pdf

As you will see he can get a Race Licence at 16 There are also young drivers formulas but they tend to be one make series like the Ginetta juniors.

Passing an ARDS course is also a requirement, and there may be a minimum age for the Formula he enters. It also tends to get rather expensive.........

He can compete in Autotests and Autosolos, which are great fun and teach a great deal about car control, BUT not in the MX5 as the car has to be by definition a "touring car"

If he is interested in competing then I would suggest finding your nearest MSA affiliated Motor Club as they may well have events that are suitable even if he just goes along to help out until he has his RTA licence.

Any other questions please ask-I may not be able to answer them but I know some people that will be.

Thanks everyone.
Much as I thought. Either an expensive ARDS course and MSA licence or wait and pass his RTA test.

On the plus side he had been saving for the new X box one, but bought an MX5 instead. At least he will be out the bedroom eh.

I remember the days when ‘Blue Ray’ was an elderly gentleman who drowned in our local swimming pool.

How much was that out of curiosity. Does look very good.

P.s. Bit of gaming/hacking does no harm. Ask Bill Gates or BinaryPunk

Indeed I learned my programming through sitting on my ar*e in front of PCs for the last 15 years or so... There's nothing to be learned from a closed environment like a console though, they are just time-killers and in my book, there's so little time in a lifetime that there's no point wasting it away.

Anywho...welcome to menders. :-)
