Well we had a play, one of the cup holder lid in the centre section had a tension spring plastic holding lug had broken, and was starting to get on my wits everytime i hit the faster pedal it shot open...so out came the centre arm rest to repair it, and just like any job on a roadster you find a few more.....the upper and lower gear shaft boots were shot, so i did those at the same time, plus i ended up taking the whole armrest apart to deep clean while repairing the broken plastic lug while it all dried to be rebuilt.
We also had some side stripes made up to and fitted them...

Had a engine management light come up on the dash, so OBDII reader out....came back with P0300 with is a random misfire, and would lose power, and then sort itself out and fine again??which basically is a fault code the ECU throws out when it as not got a clue and could be a number of simple things,,,it shown me that it happened at 83 mph at so many revs sucking fuel at and air at and so on, the code does not effect the roadster in any way as it is a random code, so cleared it and waited to see if it comes back.

2 weeks later it was back and again at 83mph. so cleared and waited...
Came back again after pushing for the fault to come on,,,, i then noticed that she had an aftermarket crank sensor fitted, so swapped it out for a OE item, so i have been trying hard to get the fault back for the last 4 weeks, all good, no red lights.

12-08 -16 6am M6 flying past junction 26 in the third line heading southbound....

I hear a load of crap underneath hitting the body tub which sounding like stones? any way 3> 4 miles on i hear a thud and the battery light come on, so thoughts go to alternator belt and need to get over to the hard shoulder, i then noticed the temp gauge go full over as i am passing cars looking for a save space to move over, as i start to move into the middle lane there was a very loud pop and then i could not see a thing as coolant is all over the roadster, so wipers on and still trying to get over to the hard shoulder, which i finally did and came to a stop and turned the engine off with steam coming from everywhere....
So what to do,,,phone call to the good lady making sure she had a tow bar in the back and wait....

So we are hooked up and off down the M6 to junction 24 to do a U turn back to come off at 25 and go down the back roads home...arrives at home and runs the roadster on the drive 6.30 'ish am popped the bonnet and found the stringy reminds of the alternator belt to then start ripping the cave apart for a new alternator and change the power steering belt at the same time, so spanners out at daft o'clock to try and get going and to work.
Belts found a and changed, now i just need to find some antifreeze and check that the engine was ok and not warped , boy this time Daryl appeared , so in goes the antifreeze only for daryl to point out that it was coming straight out of the top to find a huge blow crack, so that was it ,game over to get to work, so a shout went out on the FB menders, Andrew from Autolinkmx5 sent out a brand new one for next day Saturday (thank you) but i still needed to test the engine, the Mathew offered a s/hand one to test with which he got to me around 6pm after work thank you Matt for coming out of your way buddy.
So in went the tester rad early doors Saturday morning , thankfully all good, new rad arrived around 12'ish so that went straight in job done and running like a good un again...happy days

The thing that give me the problem turned out to be the remains of a wagon tyre that had blown out and a piece had found it's way to the belt and around the wheel dislodging the belt, i found the bloody thing on the under tray...GGGRRRRRRRRRR

Big thanks to Angela, Andrew and Matt and Daryl for his early morning banter

Pics to follow....

Well we hit a bit of a problem on the way down to the clubs rally at Donnington,,,, a dodgy stretch of french asphalt now i have been told after research , we were in a convoy of 7 mazsters and coming off a round about along the A50 i think? clear roads, not driving fast coming straight across she twitched her ar*e around tried to get her back but she was having none of it and was just doing her own thing, it was like hitting ice, no control, no tyre noise, no smoke, nothing we had to just let her slide until she came to rest against the metal barriers that stopped us from going off the pass over and we were left facing the wrong way, as the rest pulled up to come and see if we were ok, debs was the first to us and asked the question, i was fine, but Daryl was white,,, dabs picked up a grill and "said i have your grill" which the reply was "not ours that's off a Toyota" and then we looked at the bomb site form all the other cars that had lost it at the same place all over the show so me thinks it is some kind of hot spot, after finding the number plate we put it on the dash, started her up and turned her around to carry on to maccy D's to give out shirts, passes and wrist bands and to have a look at the damage, the alignment is out but not by much and the confidence her was low so i was very unsure, pulled up a Maccy D's and to be far i got off light, she need s a new nose cone, rear bumper, rear drivers light cluster, bumper reflectors and some body work the the rear wing and paint, it is what it is....
On getting a breakfast bun and a tea, handed out all the bits, Sameer arrived 30 minutes later to join us, to which we found out that he to had lost his MK 1 at the very same spot and damaged his, f*cking Derbyshire highways cutting corners ,and then once we were feed and watered set of for the clubs rally, the drive home was nerve racking as said the confidence in her was low and from having her fully aligned to how she was driving she was taking more control than normal so was aware of everything , more so as my lad was with me.
We got home and then checked everything over,,, nothing snapped or broken, just needs re aligning and above, booked in with the guys at Toyota to get her running true again and with any luck the bumpers etc will be on this weekend, just the body dent and paint to sort....

Pics to follow

But interesting research on the "that bit of road", which we will share.

Hi Wayne, as requested here is a copy-paste of the email I sent to the local pm for that constituency. No names or personal details were given out you will note other than my own.

Date: 5 Oct 2016 11:08
Subject: Dangerous road condition - A6
To: <amanda.solloway.mp@parliament.uk>
Cc:

Dear Amanda,

I am writing to you to report a dangerous road condition within your local area. I note that your catchment on your website does't not cover the exact area in question but perhaps you could forward this on to the relevant party/ parties?

I was travelling in a convoy of several cars at around 0800 on Sunday morning in damp but not wet conditions, temperatures were well above freezing.

After exiting Thulston Roundabout off J2 A50 east and accelerating to approximately 35mph the car in front of me lost control and mounted the nearside curb and impacted the steel barrier with the front end of the car followed by the rear. No injuries were sustained although the car was damaged but drive-able.

Approximately 30 minutes later another member of the group who was joining us lost control at low speed on the same spot and sustained minor front end damage. Our immediate thoughts were a diesel spill or similar but subsequent digging suggests a fault with the road surface.

We cleared the road of any debris and noted at the time that accident debris was everywhere from several makes and models of cars which I found unusual.

Upon studying google street-view imagery from September 2013 and April 2016 it shows recent evidence of recent crash damage and debris (including a freshly replaced section of Armco barrier and coned/ netted railings) as shown in the attached images.

I have also spoken to a civil engineer who worked on highways for over 3 decades and he suggests that the road may have been laid with SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) which comes pre mixed with chippings and is quick and cheap to lay. It has been since identified to be problematic.

The reasons are 3 fold.
1. The surface 'polishes' by traffic over time causing a very slick surface. (you will note the shiny surface in dry conditions in the attached imagery)
2. The 'matting' is laid in such a manner that it creates gullies in the middle of the road as the joins erode (plucking) which in turn effect the tyre contact patch in very specific areas (see attached image)
3. It's properties do not support adequate drainage or evaporation of surface water.
I noted that the braking zone on the adjacent carriageways has been re-surfaced with the lighter high-grip surface perhaps as a result of similar incidents?

In addition a google search brought up two incidents including a 34 year old woman and a 45 year old man who crashed in the same spot.

"A 45-YEAR-OLD man was in hospital with "serious" injuries following a car crash. The incident happened at the roundabout where the A6 meets the B5010 to Thulston at about 12.40pm on Friday. The collision involved a Ford Fusion and an Audi A6."

Sorry for the long winded email but I'm wondering who would be held accountable in the result of a death on this stretch of road?

I have contacted Leicestershire police, Derby council and Balfour Beatty, none of whom seemed interested although BB did take down some information.

If you would like any clarification please do not hesitate to ask. Could you please confirm receipt of this email?

Response from the MP's caseworker

to me
Dear Mr Atack

Thank you for contacting Mrs. Solloway.

Before Mrs. Solloway can respond fully, she will require your full Derby North postal address, as there is a strict parliamentary protocol that Members of Parliament do not seek to intervene in matters raised by the constituents of other Members.

Therefore can you please email this information to me at adrianm.pegg@parliament.uk or to Mrs. Solloway at amanda.solloway.mp@parliament.uk.

Many thanks.

Best regards,
Adrian

My response:

Dear Adrian, I am not a resident of Derby. Am I correct to assume therefore that this dangerous stretch of highway will not be reviewed and or addressed?

I contacted the police, not interested, Derby council, not interested, Balfour Beatty, not interested and now because of protocol the local MP wont be able follow up?

I do hope there isn't a death on this stretch of road. Not your fault I know but the problem is within your constituency?

Sincerely

The damage which i think we were very lucky as at low speed...
I must state that the Mx-5 was fully aligned, on good tyres, all new brakes and never had a issue, we were at low speed as we were in convoy...
She will need a new nose cone, new rear bumper, bumper reflectors, new rear light cluster on the drivers side, panel beating on the rear drivers wing and all will require paint, a new full alignment again, Zorst back box also ended up with a broken hanger from the impact which was a brand new S/steel back box,,,will need to remove it to be re-welded on or another back box ( gaffer tape was a quick fix at the rally to be able to get back home has it had ripped the weld off the back box leaving a nice hole, plus the ride home was hairy with the alignment being out )....so thank you derby highways for cutting corners and putting my lad and me in serious danger  :naughty: ......

Sameer in the group that was traveling 30 minutes behind us to meet up also lost control at the same spot....looking at the remains of all the the other car owners that have lost control also at this spot clearly shows it is a danger spot that is being brushed to one side until there is a death or two, and maybe then they would flap and do something about it,,,so glad i pay my dues for this crap..

I stayed the night before in Derby as i didn't wish to drive up in the morning from South Buckinghamshire in poor conditions. As mentioned above, i was on my way from the hotel to the group meeting spot and was slighty late as i was driving 20-30mph below the speed limit. My reasoning was that it was generally an unfamiliar road, slightly wet and i love my car way too much to risk damaging it.

Anyhow, same exit as Wayne, i exited for the meeting point at a VERY slow pace and my car slid like i had hit a patch of ice. There is no way else to describe it. I should point out that i have been track racing since 1996 and have very fast reactions, still there was nothing i could have done as i had lost complete control in a fraction of a second.

The damage should make it evident that i really was slow and my impact was quite minor but this is because i was being extra-vigilant and over cautious (not something everyone does). Still, the damage is in excess of ÂŁ400 to my car (matching the Mclaren paint job and fixing the minor bend in my fender being the major issues).

Am attaching a pic taken of my car just before leaving the hotel as evidence as well.

Ok the zorst was welded back up the following weekend, and i had the alignment redone, ended up fitting another set of rims and new rubber, changed the front and back bumper thanks to Matthew L...was feeling lift at over 70 so order a splitter to give down force at speed and a boot lid and wing was ordered from Autolinkmx5 also for the same reason as she is on standard suspension....
Head light lids have been snapped up by a lady in Spain to make way for some OE headlight covers.....
