All the calipers are off bar the one on the drivers front until i change the hard line, then everything will be striped ready for build up, all the old drop links are off, sorted the junction box bracket where the studs have snapped, the passenger caliper gave the biggest fight and did not want to leave the MX a crow bar and bry bars helped in to giving it other ideas, everything tells a story, the drop link bracket on the drivers side wish bone is out of shape, i did notice that the steering rack rod was bent also? the passenger caliper as not been working correct for a long long time, and was seized solid, she would of needed to be really pushed to move and the fuel usage must of been terrible the brake must of been very scary all being that unbalanced pulling all over the shop.
Alternator hinge bolt is in.

I will need to add a list of the jobs as a ref as there are so many and being added to....

She is a challenge...

Some bits done over the weekend....

Water pump inlet on, coolant in (5 year), air locks out, engine flush done and fresh oil and filter on, new front brake hard line replaced on the drivers front, drop link wishbone bracket straightened and both front drop links and new nut and bolts fitted, 1.8 discs ,carriers , calipers, lift off springs and pads fitted to the front and braided lines, waiting on front shims, S/hand P/S rack and pump cleaned ready for fitting but where it had come from did not sent the pump bracket for the engine and bolts, also the earth plug that pushes onto the top of the P/S pump and wire as is missing from the Mx , it as been cut off at some point??so on a look out for a breaker to re solder that back in.
So thats on hold, P/S filler bottle straightened out correct and fitted fitted, so waiting on the rest of the braking bits to arrive so i can finish the front add the rears ,adjust the handbrake ,add fresh fluid and bleed off, bracket for the P/S and get that on and fitted, add fluid and bleed off, re-add the under tray and diff and gear box oil change, and then she can sit back on the floor to attack the electrics, nothing as been simple and straight forward so far, and this as been needing doing for a long time, to many different people have been "doing their bit", with 90 % of it not having a clue, most of my time on this as been sorting where others have been first to put it right to than be able to start what i set out to sort, age as come into it and i have dealt with far worse, but this is the route most of these are going now if they have not been looked after correct.
A once simple job, becomes a days attack now...

P/S pump bracket finally turned up with the bits missing, plus i had a by pass hose ready from Autolinkmx5 in replacement for the cooling pipe that looked shoddy, so the power steering is all in and running and bled with fresh oil, lights left on alarm is all soldered in nice and safe and solid, as is the re location of the headlight leveler now the house old connection blocks have been removed and all soldered in solid and re routed nice and safe, and as was the stereo and speaker wiring , for some reason the speaker wiring from the cab to the doors had been messed with? the passenger side still had the plug tucked away with the wires cut for going through the grommets and into the door, and the drivers side had been completely unplugged and removed???

Which would explain the fresh wires/ washing lines running from the HU and into the doors? now looking at this with some logic ...who ever run these thresh wires cut and removed the OE plug to do his magic, why is a mistury??? any way i have re used the OE cut wires and joined up to the left hand door speaker and made a patch lead up to the right hand side OE plug back to the speaker, so all back as it should or was, started to solder in the rear left and right speaker wires to be routed to the left and right in the seat headrests.

Tested the head unit and the speakers work spot on, but the S/H electric aerial is not raising? either it is the signal from the S/H head unit or the aerial, will dig deeper on that one, as Chris keeps bringing me more items to fit....

Re: Rebuilding my mx5 mk1, after being told to scrap it :(

Postby Mazda Mender » Tue Dec 10, 2019 8:52 am

The mx5 that just keeps giving......

I am left speechless again by the c*ck it up fixers out there that have bodged this mx5 up in everything they have touched or looked at with their badges of knowers of everything and masters of nothing...
So i needed to solder the wires in for the headreast speakers and route them under the carpet ready to be joined up to wiring in the seats so the seats will need to come out so i can do it correct as there are two to be fed each side which is left and right rears.
Now i thought it was a bit strange when adding the speakers to the headrests that the drivers has the earlier type colours and the passenger the later type colours, but the seat had clearly been recovered at some point and the speaker wires were routing different to standard, which i put down to who ever had recovered them used what speaker seat looms they had to hand.
Now this mx5 is an N reg so should have the later seats fitted with the seat belt stalk/anchor attached to a slider bar that is bolted to the seat and also bolted to the gearbox tunnel so it is totally solid.....well... on removing the seat the slider mech and stalk after unbolting it from the gearbox tunnel did not come out with the seat as it should, because it is an earlier seat that was not made with that set up so fell into the car, the passenger is correct after removal and a fight with a breaker bar with every turn right to the last thread of the bolt on the gearbox tunnel, although i can not find the seat belt warning wiring or connection under the carpet so my guess is some bodger as cut the out also at some point??? so odd seats that is being used with the un safe wrong seat belt stalk that as been added and is a dangerous bodge by who ever did this, the solution is either another correct seat or the early MK 1 stalk fitting to the drivers side??? it is dangerous at the minute and is not giving the correct safety being used in a RTA to help save a life...
I am deeply disgusted with this bodge..

HRW pig tail loom made up ,fitted and wired in, Remote C/L motors fitted on both doors and set, loom fed through from the cab into the door and connected up and secured , Drivers side door membrane made up and fitted as it was completely missing, the passenger side loom fed through the cab to the passenger side foot well ready to be fed through into the door to be connected up but the rain got the better of me and everything had to be put away for the day.
The Remote C/L kit is a very good kit i recommend off the bay of E as the drivers and passenger and both 5 wire master motors , where as most kits have a drivers 5 wire master and a 2 wire slave for the passenger, i will be doing a walk through guide on fitting this kit to a MK 1 from the back end of this renovation for Chris off this MK5, i'll be doing a MK2 one also off one of my person renovations.....

Remote C/L Wiring extended on the passenger side from the cab into the door, secured and connected ,pre tested and adjusted where needed and set, tears that were in the membrane made good , noticed that the speakers were letting water past, so sealed those up, door cards back on and all bits, just need to solder the live in for the C/L solid and bolt down the earth, speaker tear drop covers will not fit because of the window winder handles in the way...

Remote C/L all soldered in and working, and the bolt that was giving me a headache that holds the steering column knuckle to the steering rack in the bin and a fresh one put in, it had lost its thread, had its time ,so the under tray can go back on and she is back on the floor .
So it is just a case of finding out whats at fault with the electric aerial, the unit or the aerial, luckily i have a electric aerial in my boot waiting to be swapped out on mine, so i'll plug that straight in as a tester and see what happens, the aftermarket water temp gauge to fit after already putting in fresh coolant...
And then just a put her all back together and a good check over.

C/L sorted from the deformed out of shape door card, aftermarket dash crash gauge pod fitted, great instructions from IL motorsport/mx5 parts as in none, just for those thinking of going this route, once you have marked up and cut the crash pad and dash you will then hit metal brackets and the pod is not a great fit...
Aftermarket hose adapter fitted to the rad top hose and sender sensor, wires routed through ready to connect the aftermarket water temp gauge and gauge installed ready to be wired in....

Nose cone to bonnet weather strip fitted, there was a lot of cutting and fabricating to get it to fit the nice and then try and drill holes to screw is down which in turn also meant that the s/steel slam panel that was wedged in place also needed to be cut down/trimmed to fit   .
