My '91 UK spec......rebuilding
Here's mine...........
Had a few rust issues so decided to sort it properly, good job I know a good welder
LH sill/wheelarch
Inside the LH rear wheelarch
Cut the arch off to get at it........
Then the sill end.......
Then began to cut the badness out..........
The front of the sill wasn't too clever either, since we were putting a full length sill on it had to come off anyway.
All cut out, rust treated with Hydrate 80 & zinc etch weld through primer.
Then put the new steel back in.
Wheel arch back on.
Back end of sill/floor/wheelarch all new
Zinc etch/stonechipped sill
Inner wheel arch
Done
Having a respray at some point so just threw some rattle cans on for now.
So having done one side it seemed rude not to do the other. Unfortunately this was much worse, cue 'A Team' music............
Rinse & repeat........it's a good feeling to get new metal in.
Wheelarch back on
Phew, nice & solid again. All the cavities were then treated to Bilt Hamber Dynax S-50 Anti-Corrosion Wax, drain holes were already widened before fitting of sills so hopefully should last a lot longer before rusting away.
The biggest problem was new metal being welded over old rusty steel that led to hidden corrosion. Also poor jacking practice.
There's still lots to do but I'm concentrating on the MOT for now, needs exhaust sorting, brakes & a brake pipe to change.
I loves it

Re: My '91 UK spec......rebuilding
Thanks guys, I can't take credit for the work.....although I can weld this was too much for me & I'm lucky to know a good welder. I did the chopping, cleaning & patch making. We almost gave up at several points but several cups of tea fortified us & we carried on.
The design seems to be flawed to rust, too many small gaps between panels especially at the back of the sill/wheel arch area, the roof drains were also blocked solid!!. I drowned the sills & chassis rails in decent cavity wax after.....it's messy but worth it. There was a lot of damage from having been jacked up incorrectly & just really poor previous 'get through the MOT' repairs.
There are a few more jobs to do, brakes all round & new exhaust for the MOT then can carry on with the niggly bits.......it never ends

It is really good to see owners properly taking steps to preserve their cars which many would scrap. I also follow the Imp Club forum as I have a Ginetta G15 to rebuild. The efforts they make on Imp bodyshells are truly heroic. With people as committed as you MX5's will still be running for many years yet.

Re: My '91 UK spec......rebuilding
Have been slowly making little changes, I'm going to have black boot & bonnet to go with the back panel. I finally got round to replacing the UK spec panel with an import one, the hardest part was cutting the holes for the number plate lights.
I liked it but it needed some work to improve the looks, deleted the boot lock while I was at it :)
Bonus if you can name the circuit :)
It looks like the original mirrors were different to the ones I removed....any clue to what they might have been?
I like these though :)
De-badged the front & fitted Moss Europe TSI's
Of course it's never plain sailing, someone stuffed the wing in the other day :(
So the journey continues....watch this space :)

The mirror thing.... it is a add on thin plate( fits inbetween the mirror body and the door skin) with a popper stud on it so a full tonneau fits solid.....http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewP ... dexID=3308.
