Rolling Resto - '99 NB

Postby Ground Hugger » Tue Oct 21, 2014 10:35 pm

Hi all,
I've had my '5' for 4 years now and other than regular servicing, I really haven't done much to it.
In fact I'm quite pleased that I've been able to tell people that I've not had any problems with it except for the brakes! It keeps eating them.
So far, I've replaced the old tatty roof with a nice mohair one, with heated glass window.
I've also picked up a hardtop off ebay, from a guy 10 miles away and in the same colour as the car. Result!

However, all was not well under the surface, unbeknownst to me, these little cars are prone to rust!
The rear arches and sills started bubbling.

I took the car to a garage to get the sills and rear arches 'done', only to be told to scrap it!
It seems the drains had been blocked for a while.
Inner and outer sills were needed, rear arches, the floor needed welding and the front chassis rails needed replacing.
She was destined for the great scrap heap in the sky :angelic-sunshine:

I hit the internet and scoured the websites looking for a replacement, with a firm idea of what I wanted.
Unfortunately, I appear to be fussy bugger with expensive tastes.
I couldn't find anything I wanted for less than 4K

At this point I had an idea and took the car to a body shop I'd used before for my camper. He'd worked miracles for not a lot of cash.
Yet again he came through and 'Happy' was resurrected. :greetings-clappingyellow: :greetings-clappingyellow:

Having had this work done, I took the decision to treat the old girl to some much needed TLC.
First job definitely had to be a new timing belt and water pump. With 145k on the clock, it was pretty much top of the list for me.
So, I took it down to my usual local garage, who could not shift the pulley lock bolt after 3 attempts using various techniques.

This is when I stumbled upon Mazda Menders, as I searched for someone else to do the job.
Wayne got the job done, but only after breaking a socket and bending a locking tool, as he strained on the end of a very long bar.

I can now move on to the other jobs that are needed, sort the brakes, refurb the wheels, sort some rust, replace the seats etc etc etc

Next job turned out to be replacing the worn cloth seats with some rather natty leather ones, courtesy of Lazza.
I was never really all that keen on the all black interior, bit like driving in the 'coal hole', so when I found out that there was a grey pair that may be for sale I was immediately interested.

The seats are heated, so wiring that in will be a job for another time.

They look lovely in there! I'm happy to see them go to a good home. They have been in my garage for years as I haven't had the heart to sell them

Message to self "Stop browsing fleabay"
Whilst looking for something else, I came across an instrument cluster for sale locally with white dials and chrome rings.

In keeping with my desire to make the interior of my '5' less 'coal hole' like, I just couldn't resist.

There are two flies in the ointment, one more important than the other.

Less importantly is the fact that the new gauges came with red bulbs, one of which is defunct.
So, temporarily I replaced it with a green one from my original dials.

Is it just me, or does the green illuminated area look better?

The second fly is that my speedo is 6mph fast.
At 3000 rpm, I should be doing 60 mph, I'm now showing 66 mph (checked against sat nav)
Can I just drive with the clear cover removed and nudge the needle to the correct speed, or do I need remove the needle again and keep playing 'hit and miss' till I get it right?

Just swapped out the dials, needles and the black surround with the chrome rings.
All the gubbins behind is my original cluster.

Looks like a Mk2.5 cluster. I prefer the red. Green illumination is dated.

Just need to tweak it but not sure how.

BTW Wayne, was there a BMW pointing the wrong way on the hard shoulder when you went past this morning near junction 27?
