The story...Build...07
I have a fellow owner that comes for help with his roadsters, and to be honest is wasting his cash on the two he has, so i said that he needed to find a good clean Special edition that he could put his passion into and not waste the cash,,,so the search was on.....it was not long before he started firing through listings from everywhere for me to check over, after a week or so going through a selection of ads form him ,one roadster stood out straight away, it was a B2 with 48,000 1996 18cc green badge , new soft top,rot free been stood in a garage unused for some time because the lady owner has a hip problem and was finding it hard work to get in and out, the OE rims and a set that was on, car cover, HT cover, a few add on's but thankfully not many, the only thing that i knew he would not be keen on is that she is a Auto, so i but it to him that this was a steal as there was only a 1,000 made of this version/model.
He listened and was keen as i explained that we could convert her to a manual if he wished....so he phoned the lady ,to show interest, and then try and work out a day to trip over and view, lucky for us the menders came into her own and a owner called mike called to borrow a torque wrench, socket and cap puller, and found out while we were taking cars that he was going in a stones throw of where the Roadster was living to his mum and dads, so mick was kind enough to pop around and look her over for us, his verdict was clean and rot free but needed some TLC, so it was what i thought, the new owner arranged a day to collect and sign the lines.
A week later the roadster arrived at mine straight from collection as i had one of his roadsters i had just sorted to swap around and take away, the B2 was left with me while i had a good personal look around her for the TLC needed, and honestly wished i had bought her myself to play with as did Mike to.
a week later the new owner called and told me that his circumstances had changed and he would be selling all the Roadsters and i had first refusal on the B" at the cost he had handed over, now i personally i have 4 projects on the go so had to think deep about it about my best lady kicking me out of the family home before agreeing to taking her on as another project.
Well i am now the owner of a B2 1996 1.8 auto green badge, which i will bring to like new condition and better than she left the factory, but she is not for keeping and will be offered for sale once i am happy and she is complete, and will be offered as the Auto or converted to a manual, this thread will document everything i change/sort that i am personally not happy with as i go along, which i am sure a lot will not bother with...
I will add pics and info as i go...

Wheels need to come off and swapped for the polished OE set, new back bumper and get rid of that crap rear fog light, chrome door latches are tarnished so need to swap those and strip down the the doors and rebuild for the locks, window mechs to all work better then they did at the factory, she looks like she as been lowered at some point as the front mud flaps are knackered underneath so a new set on there way and with her being lowered at some point as also damaged the air guide which is nothing major but it's not right so that will need to be changed, The cheap nasty front number plate holder is for the bin and i'll fit a OE Jap one, washer jets have been changed, OE wiper arms with a deflector added with nuts and rubber grommets ,number plate needs to be changed as she arrived on a private plate so i will be onto the DVLA for the P reg she was issued when imported here , so the old rims will be up for craps if interested ÂŁ100, and so will be the private plate be up for sale, HT as gone and there is a cheap chrome style bar to if anyone wants it...

Some pics ,i will be adding more...

Postby Mazda Mender » Sun Jul 17, 2016 12:41 pm

So latches swapped, door internals all removed cleaned lubed and greased then re-fitted, air guide fitted (3xbolts snapped),Jap style front number plate holder fitted, noticed that she will need a new windscreen bottom scuttle plastic trim and caps there is a cig burn in it and to be fair is past its best anyway..
Upgraded the cooling fan to a MK 2/2.5 unit,as it is a far better stronger motor( guide on here on how to do it) replaced and renewed trim screws from the interior because of missing or just looked crappy, removed chrome reflectors and front wing indicators for the OE units, after removing the chrome style bar to fit the OE rear cab brace ( from Colin) i found that the rear panel trims have been cut so will need to find a set that have not been cut with the cut outs for the rear OE brace, the instrument cluster faces have been changed to some lockwwod items so a 1996 set of OE gauges have been found to put back right and even better from a B2 that is being broken for spares so a list of bits was sent to muppet(Andrew Oulton) and are winging there way to me as we speak via Autolinkmx5, good old Andrew from Autolinkmx5 has dug into all his bits for me to for those other items i am messing or swapping for better, Andrew S managed to find me a set of the OE footwell mats that would of been fitted, so the cheap nasty aftermarket mats went in the bin.
The breather tube from the rocker to the breather trunking was i noticed sitting incorrect and running behind the lifting loop, so lifted it over the loop only for it to split when trying to get it in the correct position, it had just found a memory fix from being in that position for god knows how many years and had become hard and brittle in that spot, so a search was on for the piece of hose, i cannot believe how hard that was, any way done.
I will post a full list of attack for me and so the next owner can see what as been done to, but most of it is just me being me and not being happy with how a bolt or screw looks,,,i'll blame Mr McChatty for that, as he is away and cannot answer back ;0)

Not a great deal done on her at the minute as i attack old faithful revamp( full story to be posted)...but found a set of rear pillar trims that were correct for the year and model that have the slots for the seat belt holding cut outs, and the cut outs for the rear brace bar that had not been butchered unlike the ones that were on, so swapped them out and fitted the brace bar( thanks Colin/Ian) :handgestures-thumbup:

How much is a new windscreen by the way ? Mine looks like it was scrubbed with iron wool when the sun shines sideways. Ew.

Found this little bit of wiring while i was sorting it all out....the earth for the rear fog light was routed to the rear cluster,???? why i'll not understand as the roadsters a grounded earth, and what made it worse was that the outer cover was just stripped back and the earth just twisted to it.....nice, the switch wiring was nice to, sctoch clips and a earth wire that at some point was twisted to something????

Just a couple of OCD things done over the weekend to her...
Swapped the aftermarket gauge faces for some OE items, new cig lighter, and swapped the crappy broken front mud gaurds for some far better ones, and the pin on the dash that was missing...

Pics to be added later.

Changed the rear bumper and got rid of the eye sore that someone had taken ages fitting, i will be hitting the roadster with a full paint job so not concerned on the colour of the rear bumper at the minute as i swap and get her all together...

Found some free time to change the windscreen scuttle trim yesterday, as the one that came with here had a cig burn in so cleaned everything back and greased up like you do, just waiting on the screw trim caps to arrive...

View pics from the bottom upwards...they have added themselves backwards ????

Mine is broken.

Given the price of this piece, I'm considering taking it off, glueing it back together, with some fiberglass on the back, sanding it, painting it black and calling it a day.

Well i have finally found some time to make a start on the girl again.....so water pump, cam belt, idler/tensioner and spring, cam shaft seals and crank seal, fresh Aux belts, fresh CAS seal and rocker cover seal, fresh none flammable antifreeze, and as you can guess all clean and greased up on rebuild,,,,finish service this weekend and engine bay clean, brakes after that and then a full hit of undersealing and box sections and then onto paint....
