Mk1 S-Special Renovation Project, 10
Mk1 S-Special Renovation Project, 10
Build ....10
So, Mr Mazda Mender and myself have decided to rescue a very very clean MK1 S-Special that had a bit of light damage to the rear bumper and boot lid and so was Cat-D on the insurance. He's very much going to be overlooking this project..... we all know what he's like and how anal he is about everything I'm not really looking forward to can't wait for the "don't forget the copper grease!"
So this is the damage....
As you can see, the damage was very minimal..... think the truck come worse off I'll be honest.
Fortunately Wayne saw the potential in this car when he went to pick some bits up for another MK1. He rang me straight away to tell me the condition it was in and shouted at me to rescue her.
Look at those arches!!
So with the help of Ally, Wayne and Daryl a truck that cuts blood circulation off from the waist down some very heavy fine rain that soaks you through on a Saturday afternoon in September and a trailer, in true menders style we went and picked her up!
Wayne always getting in the way!
Got her home, threw the hard top on and pretty much left it at that for the night as we where soaked!!

Re: Mk1 S-Special Resto Project
I finally got back home yesterday after being out and about and got down to finding out what bits came with the car and getting them in place so I can see what's missing and started making a list of all the nuts, bolts, trims etc that we need to get her back on the road. Looks lovely in the sunshine so off went the list to Mr mendender to dig out whats needed from the bat cave.
Gave her a good hovering out and dried all the carpets out. Come up lovely considering I haven't wet vac'd them yet.
Can't wait to get going on this roadster , and we can restore her to former glory!

And the story begins.
At least you all know what you're doing with a roadster like that. I look forward to this resto as well as seeing this car in person soon. Meanwhile I'm off to fit another aircon compressor to my eunos

So after a fun filled weekend of pottering around the roadster on Saturday making lists and seeing what's needed..... we set out on a road trip to Sheffield on Sunday
Wasn't quite expecting to see what we saw when we got there but a massive thank you to Dave Woods for letting us strip the car of what we needed!
So with a rammed boot and back of the car... off we set off home again with lots of goodies
More to follow

Re: Mk1 S-Special Resto Project
So when I got back I started to play with the new bits I got and fitting some bits I came across in the garage and in Wayne's Batcave. My apologies for the random pics of the engine bay I got carried away with the camera lol.
Don't worry all these crappy blue hoses are coming off and getting replaced with genuine OE parts
Finally found my pop up switch off my car
Wayne had a bit of a swapsies and I put the correct red brake light back in
Out with the old
In with the....... old
Finally got it up on 4 axle stands so I could get a proper look underneath! My god what a clean car!!! check these out
So last night had a bit more of a play too, I emptied out the work horse that was brimmed with bits and set to the rear of the car for starters, although the weather was a bit iffy was just praying it would hold off until I got some tea
New ARB on, fortunately the nuts and bolts where still there and the new one had been all painted up and shiny
Thought I'd put the back end of the exhaust on just because I could whilst I was under there and also so I could put the rear under brace on.... which I thought I took a picture of but turns out I may have deleted it, or glossed over it
Set about taking the crash bar off, which I thought was going to be a nightmare but actually every single bolt turned with ease!!
Enough copper grease Wayne???
Look at that ass! starting to look more like a roadster again

So I am slowly going to update this, as my pictures are everywhere so bare with me.
Started stripping the clocks to put the original silver rings back in
Half way there
Finally fitted the side repeaters after M-m found some in the bat cave with the correct connectors
Had a few cars on the drive a one point even had a mini menders meet with M-M himself!

Re: Mk1 S-Special Resto Project
So, I had a little break from doing it whilst it was getting colder and raining all the time, but I did do a bit when I could.
New (used) Manifold on
and heat shield to go with it
All done and a nice tidy looking engine bay. Filled her back up with water, and fingers crossed for the first ever start up
She started first turn of the key
So, we treated her to some sill covers that where missing, put some well deserved wheels on her and got her off the axle stands
Called it a night after that. Was absolutely made up
Granted a few weeks had gone by and we were itching to get the new roof on from the donor car up in Sheffield, there finally came a time over one weekend where I didn't have my car or the wife's car to do and a bit of a clear day
So, hard top off, cleared the drain holes, and on with the new roof....
Rain rail all nice and snug and repaired correctly thanks to M-M
Looking good, all nice and tight, and looking pristine
Finally got round to fitting some beautiful MK1 Tombstones with speakers as it was from factory
We even managed to pick up a genuine Nardi
We got a new rear panel as the one we were using wasn't quite as up to spec as we wanted....
oh and finally a new passenger side indicator
This is where we are up to now ish, I have done a few more bits over Christmas but my phone is not letting me get at my pics so will update in due course. She's getting there now.

Re: Mk1 S-Special Resto Project
Just re-reading from the beginning again. Why was the car declared Cat-D as the damage looks quite minor. this is supposedly a special edition and I would have thought worth more than a Vanilla car?
Just how much damage was there?
