My OEM coolant reservoir had a nasty rust coloured stain all around the inside from twenty + years of service. Whilst this is just a surface coating on the inside of the plastic reservoir the reservoirs shape and small access make it almost impossible to clean effectively with a rag/bush.
My solution that worked really well tonight was to dissolve a dishwasher table in about 2 cups of boiling water and then add as many old ball bearings (ideally different sizes) you can lay your hands on. Gently swirl/shake the reservoir (take care that you dont burn yourself or let the liquid spray anywhere) making the ball bearings move all around the inside of the reservoir. Approx 15 minutes of swirling resulted in dissolving/removing all the old rust stains.
Empty the reservoir making sure all the bearings have been removed, rinse and hey presto, looks as good as new
What you put in, you'll get back ten fold

A few members have used jetwashes to clean them. I ended up using various bottle brushes and lots and lots of detergent.
Must say your idea is smarter than mine. Its also similar to how we clean loose rust from our old aircooled VW fuel tanks before relining the tanks.

Re: Coolant Reservoir Clean
I used normal rice and some water. Shake vigorously and the rice grains get into all the corners and are hard enough to scrub off any crap. Just make sure to rinse well afterwards.
I have done this once with mine ( due to the brown coloured sludge masquerading as coolant ) and it came out well .
Will be doing it again this week, as my green coolant has gone brown again. :-( Just can't get rid of the rust from the engine block, which seems to stick to the inside of this reservoir .
