Re: Mk1 restoration
So finally got my act together!! end closure and inner bottom arch section complete.
Then the moment of truth, welding on the my new sill panel. Lots of trial fits, mark high spots, remove, grind off material, repeat.....
Then tacked in position every 25mm or so along the top and at the bottom lip via 'puddle weld' spots.
Then fill in between the tacks with full length welds to minimise any distortion. Then fettle the welds into a smooth transition. Pleased with how this has gone particularly as this is the first full length sill replacement I have done.
Next job fitting the new rear arch (back in my comfort zone). Initial fit looks good. Worth all the time in checking the fabrication of the arch bottom closure.

Re: Mk1 restoration
Hi All,
Latest progress on the White beast. Welding on the near side wing is now complete (at last)
So time to ensure all the metal has a good coating of weld thorough primer before the wing goes on.
This includes the my new inner arch material and the original wing which I first removed the paint and then using a joggling machine made a joggled edge to weld the new wing onto.
New wing then tagged in place (to stop distortion)
Once in place the gaps between the tacks where then welded, again using small runs to prevent distortion.
Next job to spot weld the outer and inner arch return.
My attention can then turn to filling and body prep. First fill. Ready for rubbing down and priming.
Used the 'attach file' function for my photo's for the first time. Very good

You can attach from what ever device your on or you can drag and drop...which is easier on a PC/lap top..
So much easier that useing a 3rd party host...plus once it's loaded and self sized ,it is locked into our data base for good...

Hope everyone has been enjoying the Sunshine. Spent the day filling the fog light hole in the rear plastic bumper and removing the stone chip coating from the bottom of the N/S door.
Then primed the bumper with primer with a few drops of plasticiser for added flex and straight primer for the door.
Then baked in the sun. Next job is to guide coat and flat back the primer.

N/S door and bumper flatted back. Before flatting I apply a guide coat and then flat the primer back using a long block (on the door) to ensure the surface is flat.
The use of the guide coat means I can spot any imperfections on the surface and the block means that I don’t create any low spots. In the next photo you can see the evidence of a previous ‘dink’ this will need filling and further flatting back to get perfect.

Re: Mk1 restoration
For those of us old enough to remember vinyl records its now time for the ‘B side’ of my build.
Started cutting away at the rear arch, this is in much better condition that the other side. First I remove an inspection section just below the swage line and down to the top of the sill. Once removed I and found this.
Looks like this wing has been previously replaced by the looks of the red oxide primer on the inner sill. Also the cut out section of the wing had this printed on its reverse side.
Assuming the Mazda R Dot printing signifies an original Mazda replacement panel ???
Once this section is removed I find the easiest way of separating the outer wing from the inner arch spot welds is to make cuts every inch or so in the outer wing just deep enough to cut the wing but not the inner arch. Then peel away the wing breaking the spots as I go. As per the next photo.
And finally the result of a good nights work on the floor.

So with the sun out. Think my Red 5 holds its own against some deceit company.
Anyway back to the White one. Striping off the rear sill area.
Whilst waiting for my new sill to arrive I removed the front wing and door. Grinded back the rust and treated, then a coat of etch primer.
