Mk1 BRG restoration.

Postby oldspice » Thu Feb 21, 2019 2:36 pm

Some may recall this old warhorse in Haggismunching land.
1993 VS Type2 BRG Automatic...because I need one.

It's been mine for 15 years, over which it was motorway hammered, tracked, back roaded, was my daily for many years, been an H4H support ( automatic) vehicle giving busted soldiers a shot...if they were minus leg or whatever, and did 2,026 faultless miles in the UK on an H4H fundraiser...in 6 days flat out. Well, not quite. It needed a light bulb.
It's retiring with me and heading for the coachworks soon having languished in the garage for two years till me 'ol pensions clicked in.
It'l never ever be rain driven again...we have the Wife's chassis/wing/sill restored 2002 Crystal Blue as a daily as well.

What is has going for it is shorter than the renovation list.
80% of the paint is only 5 years old.
Got a mint tan hood & frame recently off a rot-fail.
Engine (lovely 1840cc oil tight spinner) from AK Automotive following...erm...a top end ruination at Croft.
New OEM radiator, 4 PIN coilpack,
Everything leccy still works..apart from unreliable chrome mirrors which are badly pitted anyway so they are being replaced with IL chromes which I have.
That's about it.

The list? Oh dear.
Usual rear arch & sill botty rotty.
Alloys. Original 7 spoke polished ones are truly goosed and far too expensive to refurb.
Got a set of 14" Panasports for refurbing, but the centre caps are going ot be around ÂŁ100.00.
Driver seat is goosed, probably go for leather re-covers.
Door cards....proving difficult. So many spares outlets have recently skipped them it's criminal!
Suspension: Getting Koni Street kit.
New discs, calipers, master cylinder, pipes.
Possible...new exhaust...don't really know yet.
Possible....need to refit a new CAT for tougher MOT regs.
Possible...other stuff I do not yet know of eg too much wishbone rot...the usual stuff.
Plus of course a full service including as much ATF out the tranny as possible.

I'll post up photos of the "Big Bum Cut-Open" and general build up/repairs as they happen over the next few weeks.
