I have not done very well with providing updates, but progress is happening. You can see the new floor rail in the background.

Quick Q - this hole was covered with underseal. Should it be left as a hole, or sealed with a grommet?

From factory that hole has a fabric tape and then underseal on top like MM said. If you want it to look totally original I found the mesh engine loom tape looked the same as whatever mazda used.

Personally i would use a blind grommet because otherwise there's no easy way to get cavity wax into that part

Maybe a grommet and a dab of underseal around it after wax?

Hoping to get a little more welding in today - will get pictures up.

I the meantime, a question:

The project is taking longer than I'd hoped, so the car maybe won't run for another year or two. I have taken the interior out including the ECU and dash which had a bunch of wiring attached, so I can't just turn a key to turn the engine over. What's the the best way of doing so? Is it possible without rebuilding?

You will.need the ECU and dash loom/ignition in to start and run her.
