Also the off side rubbers were both near the end of there life so off with that & i found a very small tear in the upper one on the near side so i'll get that one off too later. The lower one on that side is new & i found a receipt for it from a previous service. Put my order in with a little list to Autolink  So i better get my finger out on cleaning up & painting them areas

That's not grease leakage from the lower boot i put a load of penetrating oil on the nut a couple of days ago :handgestures-thumbup:

Got down & got dirty today after a drive in the country.
Wire brushed & rubbed down all the wishbones & underside of the front & put some converter wash all over me bits including the bodywork under the wheel arches so now we are getting there :handgestures-thumbup:

Removed the anti roll bar, drop links front & back this afternoon along with the exhaust & that rotten old rear heat shield. I may be able to sort some thing out on new rear heat shields if anyone would like one. I'll know for sure in about a week

Cleaned all the rear end up & put converter wash over everything to see what she is like. Not to bad i don't think considering never been sealed. Got rid of them drain disks in the boot. They must be real cheep metal as i pulled them off so easily. Have to have some stainless steel ones made like on the flea.

Right after a very intensive look with a tiny mirror between the sub frame & the bodywork i decided there was no need to remove the sub frame as i can still get to all them areas with my small gun. Gave it a coat of zinc primer on all bare bits at the rear end including the edges under the rear wings just in case.

Change of heart today. I thought id share a tip with you on how to change the lower ball joint rubber.

First cut away the top part of the rubber so you can see what your doing.

IMG_4437.JPG
IMG_4437.JPG (71.46 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

Then wipe away the surplice grease. This will remove any grime that may have got through the split in the rubber

IMG_4439.JPG
IMG_4439.JPG (57.01 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

Take a bit of tissue like this.

IMG_4441.JPG
IMG_4441.JPG (55.89 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

And push it around the shaft of the ball joint like so. This will stop anything else getting into the grease.

IMG_4442.JPG
IMG_4442.JPG (49.61 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

Place a screwdriver under the bottom lip & give it a gentle tap.

IMG_4443.JPG
IMG_4443.JPG (45.68 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

And remove the remainder of the rubber.

IMG_4444.JPG
IMG_4444.JPG (56.15 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

Now for the tip. These are what you'll need.

A wast pipe straight connector 40ml like this. You can get one from any plumber supplier.

IMG_4429.JPG
IMG_4429.JPG (45.98 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

A hose clip big enough to go around the above fitting.

IMG_4430.JPG
IMG_4430.JPG (57.44 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

A flat bit of metal. Anything like this will do.

IMG_4431.JPG
IMG_4431.JPG (64.66 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

A G clamp.

IMG_4432.JPG
IMG_4432.JPG (109.37 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

Put the hose clip on the straight connector like this. Its important to leave about a 4ml gap from the end.

IMG_4433.JPG
IMG_4433.JPG (56.72 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

Remove the tissue from the joint.

IMG_4446.JPG
IMG_4446.JPG (50.13 KiB) Viewed 4876 times

Put some fresh grease around the ball joint. Don't over do it :naughty: as when its all fitted together the rubber will compress & the grease will have to go some where. It could also damage the new rubber.

IMG_4447.JPG
IMG_4447.JPG (69.2 KiB) Viewed 4876 times

Place the new rubber over where it wants to go.

IMG_4449.JPG
IMG_4449.JPG (61.1 KiB) Viewed 4876 times

Place the waste fitting over the rubber with the hose clip near to the joint. Place the steel plate over the top of the wast fitting & the G clamp like so.

IMG_4434.JPG
IMG_4434.JPG (61.12 KiB) Viewed 4879 times

Slowly tighten the G clamp & the edge of the waste fitting will push the rubber into place. Just to let you know the reason for the hose clip is to stop the waste fitting splaying out as the clamp is tightened & enough to not damage the new rubber. It works a treat.

I have also worked out how to make a tool that wont damage the top ball joint cover & it's simple to make & you can keep it to use again & again. I know you can use a 30ml socket but i have found some a bit tight & this way you won't damage anything You'll need the following.

The same straight 40ml straight wast pipe connector.

IMG_4429.JPG
IMG_4429.JPG (45.98 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

Also a 40ml to 32ml converter waste fitting. It looks like this.

IMG_4459.JPG
IMG_4459.JPG (46.31 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

You'll need to cut the flange off with a hack saw as shown.

IMG_4463.JPG
IMG_4463.JPG (49.95 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

Then glue the two parts together like so using pipe weld also avalable from your plumer supplies.

IMG_4466.JPG
IMG_4466.JPG (87.59 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

Remove the old rubber cover.

IMG_4453.JPG
IMG_4453.JPG (74.78 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

Remove the old grease so that you get rid of any dirt that may have got in through the split.

IMG_4458.JPG
IMG_4458.JPG (53.57 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

I found it best to put some fresh grease in the new rubber cover.

IMG_4460.JPG
IMG_4460.JPG (55.76 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

Then put the new rubber into the location as shown.

IMG_4461.JPG
IMG_4461.JPG (51.51 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

Then place the tool we made up earlier like so.

IMG_4465.JPG
IMG_4465.JPG (50.17 KiB) Viewed 4870 times

Put a G clamp over the top of the ball joint & place a piece of metal plate over the bottom of the pipe so the clamp can clamp down & slowly tighten the G clamp like this.

I've removed all the rear panels now the two bolts that join the rear bumper to the wing with screw drived heads were a bummer so i just drilled them out after faffing about with the first one.

Been doing loads more wire brushing & sanding down underneath today & i'm gradually getting there.

After further inspection of the inner rear quarters now the jollop has done its stuff I think i'm going to cut them right out too just to be on the safe side as i can see some tiny pin holes.
