Steering rack gater

Do you need a special tool to split the ball joint to replace the steering rack boot, or can it be done with a hammer, never attempted this before??

I do it a different way ..i split the arm from the rack so then it does not effect the tracking when all back together...but when spliting from the TRE...the shaft/arm just needs to be turned out with your spanners...it will be tough as it as been on there a while...once you have crackeed the lock nut the shaft arm as flat sections either side which a 12mm open spanner slots on to rurn off and back in place..what i will say is mark the shaft and TRE before splitting so you know where it goes back to..but use a scribber or axe saw as a felt marker or paint pen will come off...
Either way you will also need to drop on the side your working on or just take it right out of play is the front engine under tray to help make it easier..some times more is less...
Hope that helps.
