Gearshaft Boot seals

Postby GlennyGills » Thu Nov 08, 2012 9:31 am

Just replaced the gearstick gaiter on my car and noticed that the top boot is torn in several places. I have looked around and there is a suggestion to replace the bottom boot and the oil. My gear change is smooth and not a problem. Is it worth buying and changing the bottom boot, as it is also likely to be torn ?

Thanks

I would change top and bottom boots, it does make a difference to the cabin noise coming through

And get a cheap turkey baster to get the old oil out. You will notice a difference for sure.

I did this the other week. My top gear boot was a wreck!! It had one concertina of rubber by the mounting holes left and that was it. Everything else right up to the gearstick had disintegrated. Fitted the Mazda lower gear boot and the DrMX5 silcone upper boot. Easy job, filled it up with clean oil and bolted it all back together. I wouldn't say the gearchange is so noticeably better (perhaps when warm) but certainly quieter with less heat soak. At the end of the day it was one of those jobs that had to be done...

So a general recommendation for DrMX5's silcone upper boot? I only came across it today when looking for the next round of jobs to do.

Yeah I have them on mine. I think he originally designed them for stripped out track Roadsters because of how they look, as they are serving a function and being in view. It is a shame to cover them up to be honest, but I'll ask Ju, Ju if that was the case. Other than that, far better than the OE one.

Finally got round to fitting the two boots. The lower boot was a bit of a puzzle, how do you fit a 1/2 inch hole over a 1 inch gearstick. Fortunately, a quick check on t'internet, found it slides over witb a bit lubrication.
Both the boots were absolutely knackered. So thanks for the advice about getting both boots.
Job done.
