Backplate behind Camshaft Pulleys removal

Postby Pincherrn » Fri May 03, 2013 9:46 am

Hi Guys,

Is it possible to remove the backplate (as above) without removing the cambelt etc. My thermostat housing is covered in white and green powder corrosion and I was thinking of removing it to clean it properly but from what I can see I need to remove the backplate to get it out. It looks like I can get to all the bolts but is it possible to actually remove it or do I not need to remove it. I have already got the O ring from Autolink should I remove it.
Would rather clean it of the engine to keep all the s**t out of the engine.

Cheers in advance.

Thanks M-m. I thought it might but having seen another post on here about camshaft seals I may do those too. The front of my engine was oily at the bottom which I read could be caused by the camshaft seals. It looks like I'll be changing more gaskets and seals than planned but much better to do it now while I have the chance. Looks like another big order with Andrew coming up.

Invest in a paint pen and mark everything up, more so on the cam wheels where the alignment pin sits, agreed that you may as well do the lot while it's all apart.
And it's wayne to my buddies, so you can call me sir ;0)

Hi Sir Wayne  ,

I already have a paint pen, I will look up how to change the camshaft seals.

Thanks

Word of advice, don't over tighten the rocker/cam cover, when I did cam belt, pump etc, my torque wrench didn't go low enough, so i did them finger tight then nipped them up, I nipped them up a bit to much and now I have a slight but annoying leak.

That factory torque setting is impossible to set with any wrench I've seen! They should be about 'spark plug tight'...finger tight then a 1/4 turn at most.

I have bought a set of Probolt black aluminium bolts for the cam cover so will be very careful.

Clarke do a digital torque adaptor which goes down to 22lb/ft, which is what I shall be investing in shortly - uber-useful, everywhere :)
