14 degree mod

Postby mk1divemaster » Sun Apr 27, 2014 7:13 pm

Hi all ,

For the sake of acting dumb, could someone explain the 14 degree timing mod, and it's pros and cons ?

I'm going to replace my cas o ring and my cam cover gasket soon and wondered if it is worth me doing the mod at the same time , please advise ! :confusion-confused:

If you have a timing gun, it's definitely worth a shot to see if you like the results as it's a 5 minute job to put back if not. Anywhere between 10-14 degrees is safe to try out, so don't be afraid to try somewhere in between. I personally settled for 12 degrees.

The consensus is that the result will be more torque lower down the rev range, which is where it is more useful for most people's daily road driving style. You will lose some peak power up top though, so may not suit everyone in every scenario. The placebo effect being what it is, you're going to think it feels better whatever the true result. :-)

If i am honest , i have never seen the point, and if it was that worth doing it would of been done many moons ago on my own.

We did it on our Mk1 1.6 track car and it made a bit of a difference. That car isn't really used in the right way to make use of it. It hasn't made it any slower at high revs on track though.
I also did it on my old Mk1 1.8 and there was a noticeable difference. It made it feel a bit stronger through the mid range which is where you need it most. If it lost a bit at top revs it wasn't enough to notice and wasn't important anyway really.
It's a free mod and easily reversible. It doesn't make the car any less economical or cause any MoT problems. I don't see any downsides.

14 degrees is the wrong thing to do. Setting the timing on a dyno is the right thing. Just today ive found 6hp on a mk1 from ignition timing and a small tweak to the afm. every engine has its sweet spot where it makes maximum torque. 10 deg wont be that spot and 14 probably wont either. Our race car last year ran best at 12 deg.. but when you find the sweet spot it shows up well on a dyno and becomes pretty noticable on the road.

Then we educate them , hence the thread. It's about setting the roadster up correct to get the best out of her to use.
