Rear discs changed

Postby Rob » Mon Apr 16, 2012 7:01 pm

I changed my rear discs last weekend with new pads. (Mk1 1.6 early import)
Is it normal for a grinding noise whilst they bed in?

Did you adjust them correct(handbreak), and are the lift of springs fitted?

Have a look at the guide M-m Jnr wrote on here about the break strip and rebuild, it is still waiting for the pic's to be added, but you'll get the idea to check the routine to follow,as for the springs give and a ring at autolink.

yeah thats pretty much what I did.
the callipers came off nice and easy, the bolts covering the adjusters also came out easy and the adjusters themselves were easy to turn.
I did nothing to the handbrake mechanism at all other than ensure the handbrake lever was off.
fitted new disks and pads bolted back together, adjusted hex bolt till the wheels bit then backed it off a touch.

With the handbrake ,you do need to take off the tension from the cable at the handbrake lever first
Then back off the pot with the allen key before fitting new pads or discs, wind the handbrake on until it stops on the caliper end and wind back just enough so that the pads are just rubbing on the disc, bleed the caliber off, reset the tension on the cable on the handbrake lever so it should be 7 to 9 clicks when you have adjusted at the caliper end on both, check that the wheel does not turn while still on the axle stands, let the handbrake off and check to see if the wheel runs free, the rest comes into play with the cleaning and greasing ,but always check that the caliper handbrake arm is also free and moving as it should as this is one of the main reasons for failing rear calpiers with the slider pins also.
