Stuck spark plug

Postby sylva » Sun Aug 17, 2014 6:32 pm

Hi I am having problems removing the spark plug from no 2 cylinder. All the others came out very easily but no 2 will not move and I am concerned about snapping the plug in the head. I am using a proper plug socket.

Many thanks.

Duncan.

Hi Duncan
As the rubber end stayed in the bottom off the OE spark plug leads stopping the socket from attaching to the spark plug or is it just tight?

Hi Wayne the socket sits neatly on the plug, I measured by checking with one of the easily removable plugs and the distance was exactly the same so the plug is tight in the head.

So its stuck and won't budge. Soak it in plus gas type oil for a while and go back to it. How much torque you can apply to removing a plug does come down to experience. If your not sure take it to a garage you trust with an old wise mechanic not some snotty youth. Your right to ask because if you snap a plug you will have a big job on. :handgestures-thumbup:

Pour a small amount of diesel down the plug hole and leave for a while.replace the other plugs and run the engine to get it warm.
Then with a hot engine and a medium sized breaker bar "GENTLY" tighten the plug.if you have any movement when tightening that means you have broken the seal between plug and head.the plug should undo as normal.
Just make sure everything is done gently but with enough pressure to release the grip the plug has on the head.
If you do strip the thread it's not the end of the world as most decent garages will fit a helicoil in a matter of minutes.

Okay sorry for the delay but problem now sorted my friendly garage in Ross on Wye managed to get the plug out with a little gentle persuasion. The thread was a little chewed up down by the electrode. With the new plug in the car is running smoother than ever. The engine was very hot as I had given it a good thrash and it had been ticking over for about 30 minutes in preparation for the MOT.

This was tied in with the annual day of concern,MOT. I am pleased to report a clean bill of health with no advisories. The garage totally understand that an Eunos does not need a cat test. My figures were CO of 0.35% against a possible of 3.50% and HC of 132ppm against a possible of 1200ppm. So really pleased with the results.

The garage just charged me for the MOT £40 and not for taking the plug out. I would without reservation recommend GB Motor Services in Ross on Wye, Herefordshire. I have no connection with them apart from being a very satisfied customer who has used them for over 7 years.
