Cambelt swap, change bolt or no?

Postby NoviceWelder » Mon Dec 22, 2014 5:12 pm

I will be gong the cambelt on my mk1 in the new year. There seem to be different suggestions as to how best to prevent issues with the short-nosed crank. I am planning to do the following:

Remove crank pulley (which shows no wobbling at all when the car is running).
If there does not appear to be any play in the crank cambelt gear (whatever this is called), leave the crank bolt where it is and continue with belt replacement.
If there is play, remove the bolt to inspect, ultimately replacing the key and crank bolt.

Is this a sensible way forward? should I aim to replace the bolt regardless?

Also, when removing/torquing the bolt it is sufficient to have the car in gear to keep the crank still, rather then needing some sort of bracing tool?
Cheers

You don't need to remove the main nut on the crank pulley just the four small ones when doing that job. If it's been ok I'd leave it alone ;-)

Leave it be unless the crank oil seal is leaking, and then we will talk you through it.
