Not for a normal belt replacement job, no, but in my case the main reason for thinking about this job is a leaky t-piece  :handgestures-thumbup:

waterpump/cambelt etc replacement howto?

Postby Shadgrind » Wed Mar 02, 2016 8:52 am

I watched 'Car SOS' (Tim Shaw is a D*ck!) but Fuzz Townsend cut cam belt along its length. A bit like this... http://www.miata.net/garage/timingbelt.html

I am going to do a full belt change soon. Will check all the seals. Not sure about water pump but may change it to with a genuine item.

I was well impressed by this. Thinking about it, it may have been 'For the Love of Cars' with Gene Hunt! Were they working on the QUATTRO?

1998 97000 miles. I just think what could possibly go wrong? Rhetorically, of course!

OK more bits to add (mainly on the refit side):

Disconnect battery..............just earth
Drain coolant....refresh with new
Remove under tray (if fitted)................Rubbish...no need
Remove air duct....and air box
Disconnect hoses from thermostat housing
Remove rad for more room?...............Rubbish....no need
Remove aux belts....and replace with new
Remove water pump pulley (3 bolts)..........Crack these bolts before you remove the AUX belts as T*t will keep it under tension to be undone, reverse when building back up.
Remove crankshaft damper/pulley (4 bolts).......same as above
Remove cyl head cover…
-Remove PVC hose
-Remove breather hose
-Remove ign coils (3 bolts) & HT leads
-Remove cyl head cover bolts (observe sequence)
............Remove air box and all trunking, unbolt PS pump and tie out of the way, clean the CAS body and bracket and mark it to replace the O'ring,,,,
Remove timing belt upper cover (4 bolts)
Remove timing belt middle cover (1 bolt)
Remove timing belt lower cover (3 bolts)...........Remove this once the crank pulley is out of the way
Align timing marks TDC on #1 cyl – lock camshafts - lock crankshaft sprocket
Undo crank sprocket bolt (Haynes says to release clamps & lower anti-roll bar to improve access).............rubbish
Loosen tensioner bolt, lever tensioner outward, retighten bolt (protect thermostat housing before doing this).
Remove belt
Remove water pump…
-Undo coolant inlet bolts (2off)
-Undo pump mounting bolts (4 off)

Remove thermostat housing (2 bolts)........not required for cambelt change - only do this if you need to replace e.g. t-piece broken

Check Cam seals and crank seals, they too will need replacing.
Will require removal of cam pulleys then:
- hold cam with adjustable spanner (locked in place above), undo pulley bolt (is it worth cracking these while the belt is still on?) mark pulley positions first
- remove crank sprocket - watch out for the key orientation (tapered end towards oil pump)
- cam seals - Haynes says drill small hole and use self-tapper to remove
- crank seal - Haynes says to note how flush the seal is, then cut around the seal lip then v carefully pry out with a taped-up screwdriver
- Haynes says do not re-use sprocket bolt - need to order one of these grrr! i'm assuming long nose will have longer bolt??

Re-assembly basically reverse of above - which bits need special attention and/or gasket sealant etc?

- what do people recommend for pushing the cams and crank seals back in?
- thermostat housing (if replacing) - this is an o-ring so guess a dry assembly? Torque 22Nm.
- water pump - again dry - don't forget the sealing strip at the top of the pump. Torque 20Nm for pump 22Nm for inlet pipe (Haynes).
- fit new tensioner, closed end of spring up (lock in outward position)
- refit sprockets - torque 60Nm
-fit belt - tight over cam sprockets and opposite to tensioner (can count no of teeth between cam sprockets?)
- fit crank pulley hub and new bolt
- loosen the tensioner and let spring tension belt re-tighten (double check belt hasn't jumped any teeth)
- take lock wrenches off the camshafts
- rotate the crank 1 5/6 turn to align sprocket notch with timing set mark on oil pump body
- loosen tensioner again and let spring take up tension - retighten and torque 50Nm
- rotate crank 2 1/6 turns to check the timing marks line up
- double check belt tension, deflection 9.0 to 11.5 mm between sprockets with 'moderate hand force'.
- torque crank sprocket bolt (use the locking tool again?) 118Nm (53mm bolt) 160Nm (74mm bolt)
- refit belt covers
- refit cyl head cover:
-- replace the CAS o-ring (procedure?)
--- disconnect plug
--- mark position
--- replace o-ring
--- refit - align lugs
-- make sure mating surfaces are clean
-- fit gasket into groove
-- Haynes says use a little silicone sealant on the corners where the bearing caps meet the head (front and rear)
-- fit cover and bolts - tighten gradually in sequence
-- torque 8Nm

- refit waterpump pulley
- refit crank pulley
- refit aux belts
- fit thermostat
- refit hoses etc.
- refit airducts etc
- refit plugs, leads
- refill coolant
- count up those spare leftover parts you always get

- deep breath
- start her up

Noted where you said bits are not necessary - just trying to get the sequence down without any gaps as going to go for it on Saturday if things go to plan.
