Idle Speed Setting

Postby GlennyGills » Tue Jan 05, 2016 1:50 pm

I tried to reset my idle speed over the weekend. I connect TEN and Ground (S/GND ??) in the diagnostics box, and immediately the idle speed drops by approx. 100 rpm. I then set the idle to around 850RPm and remove the jumper and the idle speed jumps up approx. 100rpm. This happens every time I fit the jumper. In the end I adjusted the idle with jumper to a very rough idle and remove jumper to get a reasonable idle speed guessing 900+ rpm. Is it normal to get the idle speed change in fitting and removing the jumper in the diag box?

What aftermarket goodies do you have under the bonnet?

I have replaced the cone filter and gone back to the standard air box, in addition , I have a MX5 Parts S/S manifold and exhaust. Before I put the original air box back, I had the same problem.
We did try timing to 14 degrees but forgot the jumper and it was running as rough as anything on idle. I put the jumper in and returned the timing back to my original 10 degrees mark. I have not checked the timing with a light, just returned to a previous mark I made on the CAS.

Was the engine at full temperature? (i.e. fan cutting on/off).
Did you make sure the ignition timing was set correctly?

Hi Lazza,
I believe the timing to be correct, but as mentioned I don't have a light so cannot confirm. I previously made a mark at 10 degrees and returned to it. The engine was at normal temp. It is not a massive inconvenience. I was wondering if it was normal or what could be wrong.

I have an incredibly old and incredibly basic strobe light in Finchampstead. If you want to pop over some time we could give it a look over.
