Mk1 Various Mazda Immobiliser Fitments Over Time

Postby drumtochty » Tue Apr 18, 2017 6:18 pm

I would be interested in people’s comments here and corrections if I have got things wrong re Mazda UK supplied Mk1 cars, we know the Eunos cars did not have immobilisers factory fitted unless someone can advise this is in error. From posts on Miata.net it appears the MK1 Miata was not factory supplied with an immobiliser apart from one special edition "possibly".

The Mk2 from early1998 we know had a Lucas Immobiliser paired to the ECU or PCM, it requires a transducer type ignition key and if the ECU or immobiliser are damaged or all keys are lost, the normal path to recovery is to get a paired ecu, keys and immobiliser purchased from a scrapped car. I assume these items were fitted on the production line in Japan, can someone confirm this.

The Mk1 from some time in 1995 but possibly later until the end of production had a similar system to the MK2 but with a Temic Immobiliser component set. Again the transponder key is paired to the immobiliser and if the ECU or immobiliser are damaged or all keys are lost, the normal path to recovery is to get a paired ecu, keys and immobiliser set including the sensor ring purchased from a scrapped car. I assume these items were fitted on the production line in Japan, again can someone confirm this.

It appears that Mazda UK sometime around 1994 fitted a metal bodied immobiliser when the cars arrived at their distribution centre in the UK. The system worked by the owner touching the supplied battery operated fob to a sensor on the dash. I believe around a year or so ago someone posted a picture of the metal bodied unit that Robbie identified. I cannot find that post. I have never seen one of these Mazda UK supplied cars. Can anyone advise where the metal cased immobiliser was located in the car.

I accept that there would be cars sitting in the UK unsold for a while that may have confused the dates that these items were introduced, together with the very large number of alarm / remote central locking units that were fitted to Mk1 cars that will confuse things further. Including Mazda dealer supplied alarm systems.

1975????
The system you mean is far different from the MK 2/2.5 installed units , the Mk1's was a after thought and can be removed in a hour or two and in the bin, Mx-5 still working as most of it was plug and play.
The MK 2/2.5 is all factory and all built it the ECU etc, the immobiliser box is a lucas unit and is not the best and is a case of not if but when it will fail, and as they are all talking to each other they all need to be changed and at this moment there is no by pass for the system, it cannot just be removed and the Mx-5 will start.
I will dig out an early Mazda(fitted here) immobiliser system and post up on here for future ref for you as I have one tucked away in a box for special occasions .
But has you say no immobiliser systems were fitted to the Japanese market roadsters......says it all really.

That can be removed very easily if needed, as it as been added here not at the factory.

The button type fob was certified by Thacham in May 1994 and Mazda UK advised Thatcham they stopped fitting that early unit in September 1995.

Thatcham approved the ECU /Temic / Transponder key kit in September 1995 and it was fitted until the end of Mk1 production.

I have a ‘95 U.K. Mk1 with exactly the same type of under-dash button immobiliser. I only have 1 button fob. I was planning to get a spare, but are you saying it would it be better to remove the immobiliser?

Yes as the electronics age they can become unreliable. There is a case to be made to remove the UK fitted immobiliser from these cars. As always it should only be removed by someone who understands what needs done to get the car starting reliably again after the removal of the immobiliser unit.

The aftermarket system can be removed easy enough as long as you have time and a good soldering iron and some confidence .

Do you know where to get spare key fobs for this system?
