ATF Levels

Postby joeluth » Wed Mar 27, 2019 3:55 pm

Hi, I've had a search but didn't find anything, hope I didn't miss it.

I've got my first MK1 Auto here, it was having a hard time engaging gears, especially noticeable when reversing out of the drive with a cold engine.

Low ATF it seems: so I topped it up with some Dexron II, approx half a litre down the dipstick hole when the gearbox/engine was warm and running and it's behaving better now.

But when the engine isn't running the ATF level looks really high on the dipstick, like it's way way over the top notch.

When it's warmed up and running, it's the opposite, it's just the very tip of the dipstick that has a bit of pink oil on it.

I believe I should only concern myself with the warm gearbox reading?
and that the gearbox is still very low on ATF?

Thanks!!
J

The engine is not low on Automatic Transmission Fluid , its the gearbox thats low, i was asked the very same question a week or so back, the dip stick marks on the auto dip stick are a waste of time i have found over many many years of doing these roadsters, i took a pic from a auto here that was cold for the chap and marked the dipstick ....

Nice one Wayne, yeah I found that other thread after I posted this!

thanks for the pic, that's looks about the same as mine when it's cold, I freaked out because I thought I'd over filled it.

However when warm and run through 1,2,D,N,R,P the dip stick reads almost empty.. hence the confusion as to how much ATF is actually in the car!

Yeah the dip stick marks are laughable as a guage mark where yours is now on the stick so you have a permanent mark for use bud.
