MX5 Tech diagnostic-Berkshire

Postby GlennyGills » Tue Apr 06, 2021 1:50 pm

Following my annual cat converter MOT failure, I have been advised to look into the oxygen senosor and the ecu’s water sensor. Does anyone have an MX5 Tech diagnostic check device near Berkshire that I could come over to check?
I understand that it can read the oxygen sensor and would let me check to see if that is the reason.

I have ordered replacement parts for the two sensors that I will change over, but it would be good to know as well.

Thanks

You could use a flash code test...it will tell you the same.

Thanks, I thought the diagnostic tool gives a realtime readout. I will check for fault codes when I get it back.

As recommended by our leader Mm.

I bought one.

It was easier than remembering to count and I kept running out of fingers.

Best bit of tech to have in the tool box or in my case in the glove box.
1993 1.6 Eunos Roadster (gone)
1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)
1991 1.6 Eunos Roadster with a bit of bling.

Life is a journey, best travelled topless in an MX5!!

It will give a real time graph John, as a mending tool it is great, but I use it a lot, so for a one off check it is worth finding someone local to run through tests as you say..it's just a shame you are not local to me.

Just got the car back with a shiny new Cat. The fail results for the old cat were caused by the CO %vol only, around 0.54% to 0.76% on the various idle runs. Strangely the Lambda value was Ok at around 1.01-1.02. This kind of indicates that perhaps the O2 sensor is working correctly, is my thinking correct?
Anyway, as I said I have ordered new parts so I will get them fitted. ( I will do a LED check for any ECU faults as well.)

Hi,
Got the car back and tested with the good old LED.
I think I get
10, 14, 14, 13

I cannot see a code 13 in the docs anywhere.

I have just disconnected the battery and pressed the brake pedal for around 10secs to clear the ECU. However, even without starting I get 10 14 14 13, which doesn’t make sense to me.

The good news is that the car runs fine, but eats cat converters every year.

I guess I will have to save up for a MX5 Tech diagnostic tool. :violin:
