Jolting power steering

Postby MarkEt » Sun Jun 25, 2017 9:41 am

It's been a few days now : right after ignition, when leaving my parking space, I noticed the power steering would jolt. Steering is harder than usual, then it kicks in, and again. I'm talking short jolts, like 2-3 times a second maybe.

It mainly happens when the wheels are almost completely turned, and the car is stopped. And mostly to the left.

I have had one belt slipping when cold, for a while now. Never had the chance to check which one, since it subsides after a few seconds. But since I retrofitted an OEM second hand AC, I think this can be the one. However, there's no suspicious noise when the jolts happen.

Anyway, I plan to replace the belt, check the tension (increase the tension, as I have no tool to check the deflection), drain a bit of fluid as it is overfilled (must have been for a while since I never poured anything into it), eventually replace the whole fluid if it's not clean.

I went drifting couple of weeks ago, on a special track (low grip). At one point I noticed the front drivetrain made a few noises but this light very well have been the wheels slipping/jumping.

Sounds like air in the system.

Jolting power steering

Feels like a slipping belt to me, since it disappears after a while. Mostly.

It only behaves when there's an important effort to provide (car not moving). Plus turning the AC off seems to alleviate the problem.

Have you tried putting more tension on the belt?

Just did. And found out the screw was partially broken (when it broke off completely). Replaced, tensioned again, problem gone.
