Broken rear suspension spring

Postby steffydog » Sat May 18, 2013 1:28 pm

While my car was up on the ramp this morning having it's brake pads fitted, we had a chance to nosey a bit:

Image

A broken spring on the drivers rear side suspension.

I've noticed that MX5 parts sell a copy pair for the rear for £52 plus delivery, and state it's a common issue.

"Supplied as a pair, these are exact copies of the standard Mazda spring that we've had made in Sheffield using superior spring wire and tempering so as not to suffer from the Mazda broken spring problem! These springs have the standard spring rate and give the standard ride height"

So, fitting?

Quite a bit more involved than your usual DIY job... First off you're gonna need some spring compressors and some bravery pills. You're also going to need to soak all the bolts in plusgas for a week or so before you start.

Spring compressors machine mart about 20 quid, rear spring change easy compared to front i found, just spray all bolts 24hr before, also top tip crack the damper nut before removing top plate of the car, and keep the spring compressor on when removing top plate.

Having a nosey before ordering:

2x rear coil springs from MX5 parts £62.15 delivered

2x Sachs rear coil springs from eBay £56.40 del'

Bar the price, should I go for Sachs, rather than MX5 parts own copies of the OE coil?

Copies will be in the bracket of aftermarket anyway, so get either.
There is a how to on here on how to remove the dampers from the roadster, please be careful, and if you are unsure, ask.

Also try your local motor factor for a price as they more often than not are a fair bit cheaper than mx5parts for the same item.
