Do Japanese built cars require extra rustproofing protection

Postby Mazda5tamworth » Thu Sep 05, 2019 4:50 pm

I've recently bought my first Mazda MX5 a 2004 model. However on visitng my local mechanic earlier this week for 2 new tyres and an oil change they noted that Jap cars are not properly rustproofed around the underbody chassis. Is this true? Should I have my undercarriage painted asap to protect against rust? I've just been reading this article online https://www.tiltrak.com/car-rust-proofing/

A topic a few months back by Wayne highlighted the fact that imported MX5s are not as well protected underneath as European cars.

I would say get her up on a lift and have a good look underneath . If she hasn't been undersealed then get her done.

Remove as much plastic as you can, clean out all hidden corners and check with a borescope the inners of the chassis rails, if they look solid then get them treated as well.

Better late than never or so they say.

1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)
1991 1.6 Eunos Roadster with a bit of bling.

Life is a journey, best travelled topless in an MX5!!

They are poorly protected the same regardless of the country they are sent and sold in,,,they all get done the same on the production line in good old Japan.
