Hood drain AWOL

Postby Damnitswet » Mon Nov 18, 2019 4:46 pm

Afternoon all from temporarily sunny Aberdeenshire

Mk2 1.8 here which is my first 5 and encountered my first um. Owned her 10 days so be gentle ;)

Going round the car yesterday found soaked passenger carpets. So sorted drying that out properly and cleared sill drain holes plus brought forward the Dinitrol treatment as the tread plate was off.
Now to the good bit. The car has had both rear sills/arches replaced in the not too distant past. It seems the maybe during these repairs someone has fiddled with the hood drains. Passenger side tube had been tucked into the body behind the grommet, draining into the sill. So that one's been sorted easily enough, must buy trim clips for arch liner
Drivers side is the problem. No obvious tube looking and feeling from below. From above brush gets about a foot down, I assume, a tube the stops solid. So I can't get up from below. I can't get down from above. What to do? Only though so far is a cheap endoscope to try and look around as I don't think there's any other access?

Well the phone endoscope might be a good idea but was faulty!

they are quite cheap, I have one but the filed of view is very small and difficult to work out what you are looking at.

I'm waiting for a replacement. Any ideas on what might be blocking passage between top and bottom?

Thanks. That doesn't apply yet as while there doesn't seem to be a drain pipe putting a rod down from the top stops after about 12" without appearing anywhere visible. Also can't get a rod up from the bottom.

A plastic rod will go down and through to help with the fitting of a newer drainage tube...make sure you get the correct side and grommet and that the flap is in place...needs to be re added quite quickly as the water is going through the body tube box sections...the guide should give you some reference points...

Thank you. I know that, I really do. My question isn’t how to do it once there’s access. It’s how to get access as at the moment there’s no way all the way through from either the top or the bottom. I’ve looked and can’t see how to remove the drain tray from the top and what I can see from the bottom is just an empty space.

No but if it were simply missing then a thin flexible rod would pass from top to bottom or vice versa. As it is nothing large or small will pass in either direction.

It’s possible. It feels like it’s attached at the top and somethings happened below that level. Either the rod or an mx5parts cleaning brush goes in smoothly for around 12 inches then stops solid. Twisting the brush doesn’t get it any further and tapping a rod doesn’t dislodge anything.

Can you get your hands on a endoscope/inspection camera? and have a nosey, if the tube is in there and bent the water will back up and overflow over the drainage tray, see what happens, it does need sorting quick as the water is going off to attack the inner sills etc at the minute.
