Oil filter question

Postby MXFiver » Fri Apr 15, 2022 12:59 pm

Hi folks, hope everyone's well.

I'm due to change the oil in my 2000 model 1.8 anytime soon.
I bought a genuine Mazda oil filter from my local dealer but it differs from the ones that I've had before.
The part number is different and the actual filter differs slightly too.

This is the part number for the one I bought last time (and from previous years too)

This is the one they've sold me this year...

The filter is very slightly larger in diameter this time round and also slightly deeper. Plus, it has less holes in the opening and they're in a different position.

Old filter on the bottom of that photo.

It might be that Mazda has altered the design or sourced the filter from a different supplier.
It may be that an oil filter is an oil filter and this makes no difference. Or, it could be that the dealer has sold me the incorrect component.

What are your thoughts please? I don't want to get started and find that I'm up the swanny without a paddle.

Cheers,
Guy

The latest oil filter sold to you PE01 14 302B 9A is the correct one from the Mazda parts list for the MX5 MK1 through Mk2.5 production. It was specified from the start of Mk1 production until the start of 1994 when the B6Y1 14 302A 9A filter was specified but it was then superceded before the start of Mk2 production by the PE01 14 302B 9A until the end of MK2.5 production.

Just checked and B6Y1 14 302A 9A the bypass valve opens at 1 bar or 14psi, PE01 14 302B 9A the bypass valve opens at 0.8 bar or 11 psi.

Both filters will do the job with no issues!
