Front brake slider pins

Postby TCat » Wed Jul 31, 2013 9:50 pm

Can anyone tell me why the front brakes slider pins are different top and bottom. Top pin plain and lower pin has a rubber insert along part of the dia?

I have serviced the brakes number of times and noticed that the bottom slider with the inserted rubber has been a persisitant bugger sticking frequently. I had used the correct lube for slider pins but thinking now that maybe that lube was of for std sliders but anything with rubber in it causes it to swell.

Read that silicon based products like Sil Glyde are reccommended.............thoughts please.

btw, big brakes on mk2.5 use same sliders?

One is a slider only (in the rubber housing) the other is for securing the carrier to the piston. The one in the rubber is kept in place almost suction like.

Red rubber grease or silicone/synthetic based grease should be used as far as I am aware as other grease like LM is petroleum based and will break rubber down.

WHen I did mine, I used emery tape on the pins to get them smooth and shiny before putting back together and used Castrol Red Rubber grease on the pins, and copper slip on the metal carrier brackets.

Sounds like you might have old grease in the rubber areas - if the rubbers are in good shape, clean them out with WD40.

You can also use dielectric grease with is synthetic/silicone based (what you use for electrical connections - eg battery terminals) it also has a good temperature rating and remains smooth no matter what.

Cheers Hamish :handgestures-thumbup:

Was thinking the lower one was some sort of damper to reduce vibration with the rubber insert as there was a elememt of suction. The rubbers are not in a fit state to use so new bottome sliders are required and will take advice on correct lube (never use copper slip atc as it is a very mild abrasive).

Off to dealers for new bottom sliders now ...........not cheap I know.

With them being floating calipers on all version i would aim for it to stop movement under braking, i would go with red rubber grease paul .it will act as the lube and not dry out and stop the swelling, it will also keep the rubber in good condition
This is what i use buddy.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millers-Oils- ... 53ea4d0812
What i found with the Castrol branded red rubber grease is evey time i bought a new tin it would be different every time, thin with one batch, ok and to thick.

Copper slip on all the other moving parts as a lube and to act as a protection, copper slip in the rubber heats up and attacks the rubber, it changes the proporities of the the rubber making it swell.

Copper lube is for metal to metal lube. The carrier oil/grease breaks down leaving the copper particles to prevent two steel based surfaces fusing through rust.

Try autolink for slider pins, they will be much cheaper mate :)

I use Mintex Ceratec grease on my slide-pins. It's made for the job
